Are these plates a good purchase?

I saw them at Costco for $17.99 but wasn't sure if they were a good purchase or not.  I came home to look for reviews and really only found this one with a description online:

I was hoping I could use them several times.  I'm hosting a bridal shower next month and then 2 baby showers in January and thought they'd come in handy for them.  However, this review makes it sound like they really are more of a 1 time use.  I'll be serving mostly apps that won't require a knife so maybe that will extend the life of them???

Anyone here use these?  Or maybe i just need to buy paper plates.  I just hate the cute ones b/c they can't hold crap!  And the the ones that are sturdier are either styrofoam (ick!) or huge (like the chinette ones).  Any tips?  Thanks!

Re: Are these plates a good purchase?

  • They are good for one time use and/or to hand wash for a few more uses.
I think they hold up well and are definitely a big step above a paper plate.

How ever if you have a dollar store or an Ikea near you, you could buy ceramic white plates to use at your parties, but only something to consider if you have a place to store them for future use.

  • These are really sturdy, we used them at my friend's shower.  But I really can't imagine re-using them.  Everyone just through them out.

I agree with PP about Ikea or maybe even BBB with coupons or Marshall's/Home Goods for some inexpensive white plates.

Another thing is - these plates are really big - too big for apps IMO.

Good luck!  I'm with you on the paper plates an ugly foam plates.

  • I found sme nice clear glass plates at Walmart for $1 a piece.  I find white ceramic shows knife marks over time and I really wanted something that would last.  We've had 4 big parties already and they been fantastic.

I also got real silverware at Sam's Club ~$45 for complete service for 36.

  • I bought clear plastic ones at costco once that were smaller appetizer type plates.  I dish wash them and reuse them at least a couple of times.  It isn't for big events though, more just casual get togethers where everyone brings something to share.  They usually look pretty good though after they've been washed.  I haven't had any experience with white ones.  (I also dishwashed solo cups in college and reused them for beer pong so I may not be the best person to take advice from on this end... :)  I like the Chinette paper ones costco sells.  You get A TON for like $10 and they hold up really well for 1 time use.  I used those for a bridal shower I threw a couple of years ago.
  • I'm not sure how many are in an $18 set, but I do agree with everyone else - go to the dollar store or WM, etc, and buy real dishes.
  • Thanks everyone!  I think I found them appealing also because they took up such little space!  I would love it if I had the space to store more dishes but I just don't.
I'll keep looking around or just stick to Chinette plates.
