Blue screen of death!!!

Crying  I need help!  I keep getting the blue screen every time I try to boot my laptop.  I haven't backed up in a long time!   Am I totally screwed?  Is there a way I can try to fix this on my own or do I have to take it to some tech place to get it fixed?  Or should I just chuck the damn thing out the window?

TIA!

  • What specific information does the BSoD give you?

I can't read it fast enough to tell - it immediately starts rebooting again about 2 seconds after the blue screen shows.  I'm at work right now trying to figure this out.  Laptop is at home.

  • It's hard to say without knowing what the screen says, but unless it's a mechanical HD failure (which I don't think would cause a BSoD) you should be able to have your data retrieved.

Thanks, this makes me feel much better.

  • Are you running windows 98?

If so, I would suggest backing up your items as soon as possible, and then having someone install an updated windows.

Nah I'm running XP.  I can't even get past the restart process!  As soon as I can actually get into my files, I'm backing everything up and getting a new computer.  It's been on the fritz for a while and I just started shopping around for a new one.

  • Okay, like you're saying, the main concern is being able to get your data off of the computer.  After that, it doesn't matter so much about your computer or hard drive, you can take some time fixing those.

The hardest way to get your data off would be to actually remove the hard drive, put it in an enclosure, and plug it into a second computer as an external hard drive.

The easiest way (assuming you won't be able to get the computer to boot up any time soon) would be to use what's called a live boot CD.  Go to http://www.knoppix.net/ and download Knoppix.  It's a version of Linux that fits onto a single CD or DVD, and is actually pretty neat for what it does.

After you have a Knoppix CD or DVD, simply put it in your computer, turn it on, and it should boot into Knoppix, completely bypassing Windows.  If your computer managed to do this without any problems, that likely means it's a problem with your Windows installation and not any hardware issues.  At this point, you can access all of the files on your hard drive and move them to an external hard drive or try to burn them to DVDs (the hard drive would be easiest).

If the live CD doesn't work, the problem is likely a hardware issue in your computer, and you'll have to take it to a tech professional.  Hopefully that won't be the case though.

I hope this all works for you!  Let us know what you end up doing and how it works.  We're all here to help you.

  • Random question, but it happened to my brother - his laptop fan stopped working, so his computer would heat up and shut down randomly or not start.  Windows couldn't handle it, adding a fan baseboard and linux  extended it's life.

  • Same thing happened to me - the hard drive was fried.  Sorry.  :(  Nothing was salvageable.  It was my second hard drive crash within one year.  My mom's company is an IT company and they couldn't do anything to save it.
  • Thanks for all the info, I'm giong to try that knoppix thing tonight!  Let's hope it works!
