Charting.....

I don?t know how many of you girls chart you period, but I started charting last month, and I can?t believe how dead on it is.  It helps to know when AF is coming because it helps me plan for it.  I guess I am just amazed at how accurate it is, I wish I would have known about this when I was younger,  because it would have saved me a lot of disasters when I was a teenager.  SMH

  • Can I ask, what is charting? I've never done it and am curious to know. Thanks!

    This! I loved TCOYF. Since DH and I plan to start TTC soon, learning to chart has been invaluable.

    To pp - charting is the process of taking your basal body temp every morning, immediately upon waking up, to determine when you're going to ovulate and when AF is supposed to arrive. When you ovulate, you will see a slight spike in temperature, which doesn't go down until AF. When your temp stays high for 18 days past ovulation, it can be an early indication of pregnancy.

    I don't take my temp I just put on the digital calendar what day AF arrived and it tells me when AF will return for the next month.  Not sure If I am going to do temp. I think we want to try for a few months and if that does not work then I will probably start charting my temp.

  • As of right now and for the time being we are TTA but I have thought a lot about going off the pill and using this method to avoid. The pill has been giving me so many problems in the last couple of months. Not to mention, since the time my insurance changed in Jan ive been paying $80 a month for the stupid pill. I hate it. I hate it so much. When I went to NYC last month I forgot to take the pill with me and was "off" the pill for 5 days. I felt so good those 5 days. Best 5 days ever. I just dont know how much I trust myself to be accurate and if I remember correctly my cycles were very off. I think I was initially put on the pill by my first gyno because of my irregular cycles.

    I dunnoooo....Ive been thinking a lot about this lately

  • Jenny, I felt the same exact way. I stopped taking BC about a year ago and have been using NFP with this method. No pregnancies so far either, so it definitely works.

    Really! You see, I have two friends that were the complete opposite. They got pregnant pretty quickly. I guess it depends how on top of everything you are. Ive been considering it....Im going to talk to my doc in January.

  • Woah I need to learn this new lingo on this board.

     Any cheat sheets where I can find it?

     AF, NFP,  TTC, SMH, TTA, etc. Huh?

  • Oops, I replied to Christine's post before I read this one, but ditto what other people are saying!  The thing about charting and trying to avoid pregnancy is that you don't know for sure what your body is doing or has done.  It can look like you are about ovulate or have ovulated, and so you may think you are safe and won't get pregnant, only to find out you ovulated later than you thought.  Stress can really mess with your ovulation date.  It looked like I was ready to ovulate on day 17, but something really stressful happened to me that day, and my body just didn't do it.  It looks like I might be about to ovulate now, 10 days later (link in siggy if you arec curious) so if we had unprotected sex after day 17, I could have gotten pregnant when it was looking like I already ovulated.  Sorry for the long explanation, hope it makes sense.

    I'm with you!  I always get confused by the pregnancy lingo.  I have figured most of them out though :)

    AF = Aunt Flow

    NFP = Natural Family Planning

    TTC = Trying To Conceive

    SMH = no idea lol

    TTA = Trying To Avoid

    HTH :)

  • I am glad someone cleared up the lingo...I am so lost when it comes to all that stuff...
  • DH and I used NFP last year; we purchased materials from our church. I loved being off the pill. I did take my temp every morning. And I started finding that high levels of stress pushed my ovulation back a few days....and that's how we got pregnant. Surprise

    After 5 or 6 cycles, you should begin to "get to know" your body and your cycle. I don't think that I'll be able to temp after the baby gets here because I won't be sleeping much and sleep affects your temperature. So....we're trying to figure out what kind of birth control we're going to use. I don't want to rely on breastfeeding alone....there are a lot of "ifs" and rules with that Smile

    But yeah, I LOVE fertilityfriend.com and TCOYF.....it's always cool to be informed of what's going on with your body.

    Yeah, same thing happens to me with stress. Two months ago I skipped AF altogether due to stress. I thought I was PG for sure, but after four negative pee sticks I kind of gave up. When the next month came around, AF came again. ::sigh::

    Isn't it interesting how you react to stress? It can really throw things off. Also, with NFP, I purchased pregnancy tests at the dollar store because like Eli said, you wind up needing a few to confirm things from time to time. And if you get a positive on 1 or 2 dollar store pregnancy tests, then you can go spend $20 on digital tests at a drugstore. :)
