Holiday Signs - name ?

I found some cute holiady signs that I was going to give this year. My question is for a house containing a single person would you still pluralize the name? Should the sign say "The Smith's" or is there an alternative to use?

It sounds like a silly question but I don't want anyone to get upset.

Re: Holiday Signs - name ?

  • I would just put 'Smith' on it.

Yeah I would just put Smith.

  • Is it online?  Would you mind sharing?
  • If you are saying The Smiths' house, the punctuation goes behind the s because it is plural possessive.

If you are just saying The Smiths meaning more than 1 Smith, you wouldn't have the apostrophe.

    HTH!

  • I agree with the one before me. It's Smiths. Now if you have a S at the end of your name i.e. Harris, it's Harrises. I know it looks funny, but it is correct.

I don't have the link saved on this computer. But just a holiday themed sign. I was looking for something I could easily replicate myself if I decide to make myself.

I wasn't as worried about the grammar as I was do you use the singular or plural for a single person.

    Thanks for your help though.

It's true. I'm an English major and it BUGS me when people put Harris's to make it plural. I grew up with a fairly easy name to make plural, but my married name is NOT pretty plural (Moss-Mosses) so I avoid it at all costs. I usually just put our first names when we sign things (rather than "Love-The Mosses). The first year we gave out cards people came up to us saying, "You did it wrong!!" and I had the pleasure of teaching everyone a wonderful punctuation lesson. Now we just avoid writing it and everyone is much happier :)
