Murder Mystery Party?

Has anyone hosted a murder mystery party before, using one of the kits you can buy online?  There are many to choose from so I was wondering if anyone had a good experince with any of them.

TIA!

Re: Murder Mystery Party?

  • Ugh! I went to one of these once and that was all I needed. It was boring as hell and people stopped playing after a while. I would rather have root canal without novocaine before going to another one of those.

Granted, the people at the party weren't into it to begin with so that could have had something to do with it.

  • LOL.  That's funny.  I went to one last summer at a friend's house (held outside in the deck and yard), and it was a blast.  There were about 25 people, and we all came dressed in character and we stayed in character the whole time.  Everyone got really into it, so it was a really funny.  Thr actual game ony lasted about 2 hours, maybe less, so that helped.  Any longer and it would have gotten old.
  • H and I went to one a year or 2 back, we had a LOT of fun. Not sure how she did it though, she's really creative and I THINK she might have made up a story on her own, she emailed us all characters taht we would be and told us to dress the part, each of us had 2 things that we read out loud (we took turns, unbetween reading our sentences we would mingle(as the characters and ask each other questions, answering according to the character write up she emailed us)..by the end we all wrote down who we thought was the murderer and whoever got it right got a prize and whoever got the most people to vote for them even if they were'nt the killer got a prize, as well as the best dressed.  we had snacks and drank after it was done, it was probably the best ice breaker ever!
  • If you plan on doing one, my advice is to make sure your friends will get involved. I have been to three. Two were so much fun because everyone was involved for the entire time and people actually played their character. The other was a flop. No one was paying attention, nor did they play their character.

  • We went to one for my friend's NYE party last year. Ugh, DH and I couldn't wait for it to end. Thankfully everyone got too drunk to keep playing. I thought I was going to jump out a window it was so lame.
  • I think it definately depends on the crowd & whether or not they'll enjoy it. I did one for my sister's Bachelorette party this summer & we had a great time. Everyone got into it. They all got their character info in advance so they could dress up & prepare. It was spa themed-the murder took place at a bachelorette party held at a chocolate day spa. It was fun. Everyone got a little gift bag of various dollar store bath items & everyone had to bring a chocolate treat for the party.

My advice-just make sure the crowd you have will be into it. If not, then it's not going to be fun.

  • I am hosting one Saturday.  We had one about a year ago that was so much fun - we still have jokes with the group of friends that came referencing the party. I am just as hopeful for this one, though three (of eight) guests are different.

It is what it is and only you know your friends.  Ours are great sports and enjoy the company, the food, the wine, a night out.

  • I'm a lurker from WC board and I had to comment on this. My church has done these in the past and we LOVE them. They use the kits online (the wedding theme was super fun). We're having one next month and it's 80's theme. If everyone shows up willing to play it turns out great. Sure, we all get off topic and start doing our thing, but ultimately we all played till the mystery was solved...

i was going to host this for DH's 30th (long story short because of moving we didn't have it) and I did a ton of research on which kit to buy. I love this website. Great kits and a forum that has other people who have done it and can help you out.  We're still planning on having it, maybe in January (once I figure out how many people will fit into my super tiny home ,lol)
