Pet advice needed

Anyone know much about kennel cough?

Jack was last vaccinated for it in August. We boarded him for a weekend approx. 2 weeks ago. Last night he started making that weird honking/coughing sound. He sounds like he's trying to expel something from his throat, but nothing is coming out. He sometimes starts doing that after he sniffs something in the grass, but this time it started while we were indoors. It's been continuing off and on today, indoors and outdoors, especially when he gets up from a lying position. His eating and bathroom habits are all normal.

My neighbor and H think it's just allergies. I would agree but for the fact that he was somewhat recently boarded. Should I be calling the vet now or wait it out for another day or two?

Re: Pet advice needed

  • Poooor Jack!  Sophie and Caleb got it from the dog park once, same hacking cough, as though trying to expel something and yes, nothing comes out.  I ended up not taking them to the vet because when I went onto message boards for Bostons, they said it should pass shortly but if not, then take them in.  It went away in about a week, perhaps a day or 2 more.

Hope he feels better soon.  =(

  • So far it doesn't seem to be bugging him much. When he honks like that occasionally, it's a little funny to listen to. But I've never heard him do it this much in such a short span of time and I feel bad for him. He is due for his rabies shot soon, so I might just try to bump up his appt. to sometime in the next few days and bring it up then if it hasn't resolved itself.

  • It is entirely possible for a dog to get KC even though they've been vaccinated against it (lame, I know). If it's just coughing, I wouldn't worry as much and let it run it's course as long as he is still eating and otherwise is comfortable. Do you have a humidifer you can run for him? Or let him sit in the bathroom when you or your H shower so he can get the benefits of the steam? You can also give honey (half to one teaspon three to four times a day) to help with the coughing.
