possible new job prospect-scared-advice please.

so i work for a very large company in Philly and there is an opening in another division that is very appealing. there are a few hiccups though and i cant decide if i really want to apply. I have talked to the hubs and he says, whatever you want, which has not been really helpful. I could use some help.

Pros: New division(diversify my background) with an awesome boss. Meet much higher level execs in the company and get my name "out there". More in depth work, and definately more challenging than my current role. New positions dont come up every day that i would be a fit for.

Cons: 40-50% travel (Boston-Virginia), the awesome boss may have extremely high expectations, i'm travel savy but not very tech savy and would need to really get a crack-berry and learn to do a lot "on the road". Biggest con, the last 4 people that have been in this role have vacated it after a year due to the travel. The boss says they are evaluating this and will be much more flexible, but i'm worried i will burn out.

Side notes: i have it very easy rigt now in my current role; work from home one day a week and can pretty much do what i want as long as my numbers are right, not sure i will have this flexibility in the new role, but in all honesty i'm feeling stagnant.

So i think a huge part is just fear of the unknown and that i should go for it, but i have this naggning in my gut that i shoudl stay put.

Re: possible new job prospect-scared-advice please.

  • Are you planning on starting a family anytime soon?  Because if you are you probably won't be able to travel that much.

My husband travels about that for his job and it's fine for us, but I personally don't enjoy traveling.

  • How do you feel about traveling that much?  Do you do well with traveling? If you can withstand the traveling and can give up working from home than I would probably recommend it.

On the other hand, I suck at traveling and would be an awful employee if I had to travel regularly.  My husband flies 2-3x a month usually for work and currently is out of town usually for 3-4 days at a stretch.  He can handle the constant travel so it works for him.  Can you handle that kind of schedule?

  • Hmm.. tough one. I'm actually in a job like you described, without the 40-50% travel requirements. I love the exposure I get with upper management, and I do think it will benefit my career in the long-run.

However, I think I would have a few questions I'd want to answer before applying: What are my life and career goals? Baby timeline? Likelihood of getting old job back or similar type job if you burn out in the new job.

Honestly, I think that would be the kind of job I'd want to do for 2-3 years, then get out. Good luck! Overall, I don't think it hurts to apply and interview if given the opportunity.

  • Hmm...this is definitely a tough decision to make bc the pros and cons are strong for each side.  I guess it depends on your future goals career wise.  Are you looking to stay with the company for a really long time?  If so, does that raise concern about the burn out factor?  If you do in fact burn out, are you in an industry where you could transistion into a similar role at another company or within your own?

I think the tech savvyness part is something that can be learned, so for me, I would not think that should be a huge roadblock for you.  It sounds like a great opportunity overall, though...

  • Overall i'm good with travel, but DH isn't. he is a huge whiner when it comes to me being away. but he did say if this is what i wanted he would support it. LIke i said my only drawnback is my lack of tech skills and being able to KIT with everyone on the raod. But the flying etc is not an issue. Plus, since it's only MA-VA a lot of the locations i could drive to or take the train, which i am totally fine with.

Babies-we are on the fence. still not 100% sure we want to have kids but if we did it would start trying late next year. that is the age range we discussed

As far as being able to get my old job,or another job...that is a concern. something would have to be "open" for me to transfer out. I think this type of role for me would be a great stepping stone, like a 2 year move then move to another division. i'd like to be with this company for a long time and feel i need to diversify to make myself as appealing to other divisions as possible. but i do fear that if after a year i hate the travel i would be stuck if something wasnt open.

  • I think I would probably interview for the position at least.

  • I agree with Anna.

With everything you've said, it sounds like this would be the right move at the right time. Even if you decided to have kids, you'd be in this role nearly 2 years (and can travel via train easily while pregnant) before needing to reconsider.

From what I've experienced, the at-home spouse is a tough role (I did it for my H and now he does it for me), but I personally think it has made us as a couple stronger.

And don't stress about the technology. You'll be amazed how quickly you will adapt to either a Blackberry or the iPhone.

  • Thanks ladies-I have to tell my current boss tomorrow that I will be applying (hopefully she takes it well) and if i get thru the intevriew process and think it would not be a fit then I think i should be ok to stay where i am at.

Just very scarey is this economy to change things up. Thanks for your advice.

  • Good luck and don't stress! Just remember that it is also potentially detrimental to not take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves in this economy as well.....
  • The job sounds awesome and it seems like you're really excited.  The travel thing would worry me.  I used to have a job where I did that much travel and it interfered with everything.  I did enjoy it at first, but it got old.

I'd say, if you're up for the travel, give it a try.  No one can fault you for trying.  If you don't like it, I'm sure they'll be plenty of other opportunities available and in the meantime, you'll get your name out there and make tons of contacts.

  • Just remember that they usually have you travel more than they tell you at first!!  Someone in college told me to double whatever percentage interviewers tell you!

I travel alot to MD for my work.  It'gets old going to the same places all the time.  I like going to new places, but just get sick of the same ones.  Just something to keep in mind.
