Hi ladies, I need a vet recommendation as I am fed up with mine.
Our dog Sadie has been having some stomache issues since this summer and we're really looking for a vet who is going to take the time to look at her diet and make recommendations.
What has been happening is we switched her to a better food and after about 6 weeks she got runny poop. So we went to chicken/rice, antibiotics, etc. Then about a month after that, back to the runny poop. Vet gave more antibiotics and prescription Science Diet (i know, i know). Then after that we tried a food recommended on the pets board and it's been about 2 months back to runny poop. We're taking her to the vet tomorrow, but unless they're willing to work with us, I'm seeking a second opinion.
The first food was Chicken soup puppy, the second food was california natural adult chicken/rice. Someone recommended blue buffalo to me this morning for sensitive systems.
Any help ladies, I'm in Yorktown, but I will drive to the Southside, b/c I just really want to get her better and on a good food.
Re: Vet Rec-HR
I worked at Dog & Cat in Norfolk for a few years and they have had an almost religious following since the 60s. The owner, Dr. Hallstrom, is unbelievably kind and compassionate. The foods they carry are all Science Diet and they have a bland formula for intestinal issues, but he may have other ideas.
Did the first vet even do a fecal smear to check for parasites or did they just prescribe the antibiotics? Your baby may have something that antibiotics won't take care of If you have questions, please email me - sunflower1998 at cox dot net
Yep, they've swabbed every time and nothing has come up. We thought it might be too much protein b/c chicken soup is a high protein formula, but the california natural which is one 1 protein is doing the same thing.
I really want a vet that doesn't recommend off the shelf 1 and 2 star foods.

We go to Grafton Animal Hospital now. I will say Friday's appt went ok and they gave us some food that we can take back if it doesn't work.
She's on day 5 of chicken and rice, yesterday we added in some of the new food for sensitive stomach and will slowly increase the ratio to total food by end of week.

Glad that it went OK and that things are improving. We go to York Veterinary Hospital, and I've been pleased with it, but as I said, we've never dealt with stomach issues either.
I go to Boulevard Vet in Norfolk, right on the border of VB. She's a holistic vet and also does chiropractic and accupuncture. That's why I chose her... I don't think regular meds is always the way to go but she will use them if necessary. I have a dachshund also and want options should she have a back problem.
I feed Calif. Natural because Jake, our bigger dog, has a sensitive tummy. The protein content in the adult version is on the lower side, so that was a good choice if that is indeed the issue.
I take my dog to Bayview Vet in Norfolk, however I don't think that Dr. Pope would have anything additional to add to whats already been done.
My dog had some butt issues (anal glands) and also allergies. I switched him to a raw diet and he's been perfect since. The raw bones (especially chicken bones) have done wonders for my dogs stool - it is now hard (I know, TMI) and you can regulate the "end result" by adding or reducing the amount of raw bone the dog eats. Obviously this isn't something that you can just start tonight, it took me months to read all of the research etc., but I feel it's what's best for my dog - and cheaper than dog food!
