Poll: Christmas Cards

So i need to get on ordering christmas cards if i am going to do it but am undecided and wasn't sure if most newlyweds send out cards or if people generally waited until they had children.

etiquette girls: is it okay to have them personalized with our names or are we supposed to sign every one of them?

that may seriously determine whether i send them out or not...

What are you all doing?

Re: Poll: Christmas Cards

  • I voted "undecided". I know we are going to send them out, but no idea what the format or photo will be (if there is a photo?).
  • I'm designing mine using a wedding pic and ordering VP postcards. Customized, AWish, and cheap.

  • We'll probably do them, but only to those we were close enough to that they were invited to the RD.  I'll also send them out to those that send them to us.  Basically I'm trying to reduce our costs and figure sending a bunch of cards to people who won't give a damn isn't good for the environment either.

I'll be using store bought since we have leftovers from years past.  I'm really not into wedding pics in xmas cards...my SIL did that and it came across as AWish (but thats probably bc thats what she is).

  • I don't get why people include a wedding picture with the holiday card.

    Can someone explain this?

  • Using store bought cards that we got on sale last year.  I did have a bunch of copies of my fav wedding pic to insert into the cards for family and such that were not at the weddding.

I have made cards in the past but just don't have the energy this year.

  • For the past 5 or so years, we've done photo Christmas cards. We choose a picture (two years ago we got pics made at a studio), get cards made that have some sort of generic greeting (e.g. Happy Holidays! Love, Mike and Chrissy), then type out a letter to all of our friends and family, and both of us sign that.

We'll do the same thing this year. We'll probably dress up and take a picture very soon. We're not doing a wedding picture, because we want Chazzykins to be in it with us...and he obviously wasn't in any of our wedding pics!

Families send photo cards with mom, dad and kids and pets. Or husband/wife/pet or pet or kids.  DH and I may not have pets or kids, but we're still a family.

Plus I like to AW my pretty wedding pics.

  • I am creating mine and they will have our names printed on them.  Most that I have received are this way.

  • i guess i can answer my own:

i have designed a card from vista print with a photo us kissing in the snow from last winter (actually part of our engagement pictures).

my family all said we should have done wedding pictures, but thats not christmas-y to me at all, so i was wondering if you all were planning on doing that.

God, now i just have to order them...

  • Sign your name, please. No offense to those who do this, but preprinted names feel so distant to me.  I try to write a line or two in all my Christmas cards. If you don't have time to do that, then the person isn't really important enough to you to get a card.  The only ones I get pre-printed usually are from service providers (doctors, dentists, etc.).

DH and I will probably do store bought cards, or a "family" picture card now that we have the pup.  But not a wedding pic. We figure our friends and family are over it by now.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I don't see anything weird about using wedding pictures - we're newlyweds! Next year, it might be a little odd.
  • You can add holidayness to any wedding pic! (No, we're not using this)

For the same reason anyone sends Christmas cards with completely unrelated pictures of their family or pets on the front. They're showing off their family / pets / recent event to people that may not see them often. Do you think that in order for a picture to be acceptable for an xmas card, that everyone needs to be wearing Santa hats of have candy canes stuck up their asses?

  • Nice timing, shag. See post above yours! But I forgot the candy canes. :(

  • Mamie - that doctored pic would be perfect Stick out tongue

I dont even know if we will manage to send any cards out this year - I'm so over mailing things with all the invitations, thank yous, etc.  If I get motivated maybe I'll take a "family" pic with us and the dogs.  Sending out store bought cards doesnt seem so original/worthwhile to me but like others have said, I feel like people are over our wedding pics - plus we used a photo thank you card so I feel like it would be over doing it.

  • Maybe it is just me, but I think photo holiday cards are weird, especially when there are not kids involved. I mean, I don't like photos on cards in general, but I'd be a total biatch if I didn't melt a little at the cute kid ones. I don't know, I just can't imagine anyone outside of my parents wanting to hang a picture of me and the mister up on their fridge. When I get cards like that (just the couple or even weirder, the couples pets), I do not know what to do with them...

Does that make me a bad person? If it does, oops.

  • Choo - this is how I feel about photo cards too.

Andplusalso - I'm assuming you'd be sending holiday cards to those who attended your wedding; they've already seen you and your hubs in your wedding gear.

  • I started a tradition of taking photos with my cat in holiday costumes (one year a santa hat, one year reindeer antlers) so when DH and had our first Christmas living together, we took a picture of us with our two cats in costumes (Mrs. Claus and an elf).  I imagine we'll get some new costumes and do it this year, though I suppose if I run out of time I would do a wedding photo.  And I always write a little personal note and we both sign, though it's not as newsy and informative as a letter would be.  People seem to like them.
  • Choo definitely doesn't make you a bad person if you don't like all photocards. To be honest, I don't really like them either.

A photocard is a photocard though, regardless of the picture on it. If a picture of your family hanging out in your yard is acceptable, so it a wedding picture. Both are completely non-xmas related.

Last year my MOH sent one out of her boyfriend and her on the beach. If I remember correctly they were both in their bathingsuits. Completely annoying and inappropriate.

  • I prefer photocards to store bought cards. Then again, I hate store bought cards in general.

Not that we'll be sending out holiday cards - as my FIL would say, it's goy-shky. ;)

Even weirder than pictures-- the year recap letters. Um. Yeah. Bad person here. I know what is going on in the lives of the people I care about. If you feel the need to send me a letter, I clearly don't care to keep up with you beyond polite conversation.

Last year Alex and I got 15 of these letters. One was so awkward, it still makes me cringe. The last line? "No kids yet. But we're trying!"

    VOMIT.

  • I'll take a modicum of personalization over a stock image of a starry sky and a lighted tree. Or snowman. And like dandy said, we're newlyeds and it's our first married Christmas where we can put "The Lastnames." I'm taking advantage. It would be the only year. Not to mention, I'm going to get my mileage out of my pro pics any way I can. They're the balls.

  • I think the mister and I are just total douchelgangers about the holiday cards we receive. That being said, this year I had a pretty kick a$$ one designed and I'm pretty excited to pick it up.

It is super simple. Just a little picture of a hand drawn world with some stars. But underneath it it says OY to the world. Freaking awesome.

haha that makes me think of that old No Doubt song.

I like hand designed things. But just picking up some prewrapped cards from Target or Wal Mart or wherever seems tacky to me. No offense to anyone - I hate when my best friend does it. So if you do it, we can still be besties.

  • I always do a standard christmas card and include a picture. Last year we did our e pics this year we'll do a wedding one...just not sure of just M and I or a picture of the wedding party (since it's my favorite).

I do hand designed because my best friend from home has a stationery company and in this economy, I know her work load is down. My paper addiction has singlehandedly been keeping her busy. I'm throwing my husband a surprise "billionth second alive" (don't ask) party and we have cried laughing trying to design the invites. Anything to support a friend. And throw a party. I love parties.
