Today I meet my Little Sister!!

I applied to be a Big Sister in August, and after all the background checks and reference-checking, they have finally matched me!!

She's 10 and I'm so excited to meet her today!!

Any recs on websites with fun kid-stuff to do around town?  I have been searching for weeks now, and I do have a bunch of fun stuff to do, but I really want to have a big variety to let her choose from.

EDIT: Tonight I meet her at the BBBS office.  We will then decide what type of "activities" to do with her parents and the BBBS counselor.  So today is just a "get to know you" meeting where I get to meet her family and they meet and interview me.

But starting next week we will need fun things to do.  I'm sure she'll have tons of stuff she wants to do, but I want to come prepared, too!

Re: Today I meet my Little Sister!!

  • oh my gosh! How exciting!! :)  A friend of ours is in BB/BS and he has a little brother... it's been amazing to see how much this little guy has changed our friend and his outlook on life.  It's like, he gets to be a dad without having to deal with a wife or baby ;)  He LOVES it.

That being said.. Maybe you could just go for a walk (if the weather is nice enough) at a park and just talk and get to know her?  Maybe future visits you can do girly things like mani/pedi's? Or go to the childrens museum, the world forestry center, etc.. Find out what she's into and then do things involving her interests?

  • That's great!

I mentored a teen 2 years ago...and the best thing about it, was just hanging out low key, like going for a walk together, or to Subway or something.  When I tried to "plan" a big day of activities, it was overwhelming for both of us.

Zoo Lights will be really fun in a few weeks!

  • That's so exciting!  How often will you get to see her? OOOh, how about the holiday parade or Christmas tree lighting coming up? There's also a tree lighting in Mississippi after the pioneer square.

We will get together every week.  I'm really excited, she sounds like a great kid and I can't wait to have an excuse to do fun kid stuff!!   And she loves dogs and crafts, so we're a perfect match!!

  • I always loved going to Omsi and the zoo. Someone mentioned zoo lights, that would be a blast. Maybe she would like the Singing Christmas Tree next month. Do you know of some parks where you could ride bikes or feed ducks or something? If she's in to crafts you guys could hit up Micheal's and get supplies to make t-shirts or jewlery. HTH!
