Some of you might have seen this on my facebook...
So, I have a class that has 3 challenging boys in it behaviour wise... and I just got a new teacher to help out with the group once a week. Now, this new teacher is new to our school, and was transfered here under suspect circumstances.
Anyway, long story short: she fell asleep in my class today. I have a group of 29 unruly students and my freaking support help fell asleep in my class. How the hell are you supposed to wake up a teacher? She's like 45! The whole class noticed, and tried, unsuccessfully to wake her up too. I've been working my butt off to gain the respect of these kids, and to have a teacher behave like that... they went crazy. It was a freaking gong show. And she didn't try to explain herself at all to me! She said "you have a great voice" and I said "uh" and then she left me standing there totally bamboozled.
So, I told on her to my principal. I don't know if that was the right thing to do... especially since today I had to talk to the union reps. =/
It seems that by talking to the principal, I may have caused some issues for myself with the federation. Apparently I should have a) talked more clearly with the teacher who fell asleep and then b) talked to the school's union rep and THEN c) talked to the principal.
I don't know what kind of trouble might be heading my way, but I'm not looking forward to it.
Re: Classroom drama-rama
yikes! That's not good at all. I can't believe she fell asleep! Craziness.
And unnecessary trouble for you. What a pain. Goodl luck!
Wow, falling asleep in class is totally unacceptable. Can't really blame the kids too much for making a big deal out of it this time... I think if I were a kid in the class, I would be rolling on the floor laughing.
I guess I would agree that you could talk to the teacher first. However, how is it not general understanding that you don't fall asleep in the classroom, whether you're the student or the teacher?! You shouldn't be falling asleep at work (though sometimes I want to
). It's so weird that you're supposed to talk to the union first before the principal.
Sorry you have to deal with this... You shouldn't be the one in trouble though. YOu didn't do anything wrong! You weren't the one that was falling asleep at work!!!
I SO agree w/ this!! I hope everything works out. Keep us posted.
Ugh...red tape. This is why I never went into classroom teaching. I have been in education for over a decade but refuse to get into the administrative B.S. that happens in school settings. EEK!
Good luck.
And I agree...at what point is a teacher falling asleep during class acceptable?

I'm sorry to hear that. Unions are a funny thing, you have to be very careful. In the last place I worked, it was so political. I think you did the right thing though, and I hope you'll be understanding a bit more. You didn't do anything wrong - she did. She fell asleep and then you had to deal with the mess! Not nice.
That sucks. That is so unprofessional of her to fall asleep! I can't imagine doing something like that..ever!
Good luck, I hope you don't get in trouble.
