It just gets better and better. Straight from one of my classmates today:

"I think children should learn sign language in school and not Spanish. Think about it. Nobody is going to turn into a Mexican and need to speak Spanish but you might go deaf and need sign language." 

I mean, how do you respond to a statement like that??!

And before I forget, this is the same person who said she swallowed a spoonful of Vick's Vapor Rub to help her cough. "It says do not swallow on the bottle, but I've been doing it for years!"

I think the funniest part is their rationalization. They put thought into that statement with the few brain cells they have!  It kind of reminds me of the kind of argument Cher would make on Clueless. "May I remind you that it does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty!"

Have you ever watched NCIS and Gibs smacks whomever on the back of the head for soem remark they made.  That is what you should respond with.

Perhaps the second statement explains the first?  Who knows what brain-killing chemicals are in that vapor RUB...

And I love the sentiment that as long as you don't "turn Mexican" you will never, ever, need to understand or speak Spanish.  It really explains so much.

As a linguist, I love this statement on so very many levels that I can't even explain them all.

But I will agree with one part - I think learning sign language is an excellent idea. But that's unrelated to my "turning Mexican" fear.

I'm kind of late on this one, but I just had to say that was absolutely hilarious and frightening at the same time. I wrote about one of my stupid classmates in dandy's post to you. But anyway, that just makes my brain hurt. Especially the Vicks Vapo-rub part.
