used a c'mas tree with the ball still on?

My DH is interested in having a Christmas tree that still has the roots or whatever so that we can be "more green" and plant it in our new yard when finished.
Have you ever done this?  If so, do you have pics of the base, tree skirt, etc.?  I just can't imagine what it will look like in a small tub (or whatever) and what it will look like.

TIA!

  • I have see one before, they placed the tree in a wooden barrel when it was in the house.  But this house was decorated very rustic so it fit in nicely.  The barrel looked like this & I think they set the skirt underneath of it (not around it)-

  • my parents did this once when I was a kid but I don't remember it.  I'm sure when you go to buy it (if you buy it at a nursery) they can give you an idea of what people do.
  • We did it every year when I was a kid. My dad works at a nursery, so he would get a tree from work and we'd cover the bucket with a tree skirt. It was taller than normal trees, but worked fine. We just had to water it.

Then we'd either plant it, or he'd take it back to work if we didn't have room.

This. We did this as a kid as well. Dad always planted them afterwards, so we had to really get the tinsel off of it. ;-) Sadly, we lost one of our replanted trees one year after it was creamed by a drunk driver.  Some of the other ones are still in my dad's yard.
