desparate newbie

Hi all. I need your help and don't have time to lurk for a bit. I installed Windows 7 on my new laptop, only to find out the exam software at my college won't support it this semester. Alas, I needed to reformat my old laptop. Completely stripped it, reboot with discs and now I'm stuck. The wireless network (working before reformat) isn't working. It's showing that our network is connected, but then if you go to explorer, it says the page cannot be found. We tried another page, but no luck. We checked IP addresses and such, and then made them similar to the one for the new laptop. Am I missing something? How do we start from the beginning? I've been to hp.com and tried a few things. I downloaded drivers by using the new laptop and transferring to the old. It's an hp pavilion zv6000

Re: desparate newbie

  • PS. Sorry for sounding snobby, but I'm really rushed, as there's a deadline for this. I wish they had told me in advance Windows 7 wouldn't be supported. Is ther a way to convert back and then upgrade again? I usually post on the Aug 09 board or pets. Thanks in advance.

  • are you able to hard wire in until you find the problem?

  • Did you double check your WEP key? The SSID needs to be accurate.
Wireless can be really tricky, and for us it is usually a lot of trial and error to make things work.

Are you trying to connect to your school wireless or a home wireless?

  • I reallly appreciate all the answers. It was a home wireless, and it would hook in if it was hardwired. That was the annoying part. So, I could at least download the software for the time being, but the school is wireless without hookups. However, thanks to my friend coming over and running into the same problem with a fully working computer. We did find out that the password was wrong that he was putting in for the wireless connection. It was really odd it was showing connected but just not letting us on the page. Normally, it won't connect with teh wrong password. So, thanks for all your help, but it turns out the hubby is just a dodo bird. :)
