Sometimes I don't tip either...

....but I dare the manager to call the cops on me.  I used to work in the service industry- while a lot of people think that tips are mandatory, they're not.  If the service stinks, people have the option not to tip and it sounds like that was the case in this instance.

Re: Sometimes I don't tip either...

  • How to fix this problem:  Pay people in the service industries a normal wage like they do in all of Europe and Australia (this is from my experience, so I can't speak for Asia or South America).  There's no such thing as tipping in a lot of countries, and you still get good service.

  • This is literally less than 2 min away from me!  It's not a fabulous place, just a regular pub that's near a college... amazing.  (if you're talking the Lehigh Pub) Dh and I went there once. not impressed.
  • I too was a waitress and I used to get stiffed all the time, more because the person was cheap than for any real reason. But it's part of the gig -- you wait tables taking that gamble that they're not going to tip you jack shiit. How entitled they must be to actually call the cops about it.

That being said, I do think not leaving any tip at all is horribly tacky unless the person wasn't trying at all and was pretty much ignoring you.

  • That is INSANE! And I'm sorry, but they were not charging the "mandatory" 18%, they were charging 28%, WTF!!

I agree, I don't care if it's mandatory. Just the fact that they screwed up the bill speaks volumes. That kind of bad service (the kind described in the article) should not be rewarded.

  • I think a lot of waiters/waitresses think they DESERVE the tip so they just give crappy service thinking that they will atleast get the minimum 15% (normal in CA).  The way I see it though is that you really need to work for the tip.  Yes it sucks that waiters/waitresses make very minimal wages BUT customer satisfaction is part of their job and this is how the tipping should be done.  If sh*tty service is given then you get a sh*tty tip not 15%, if you give good service you get 15% and if you go above and beyond you get 20% or more, IMO.

    I totally agree!

And they should have arrested the manager who called the cops for fraud, since they were overcharged for the "mandatory tip" in the first place.

  • I worked in the restaurant industry for a long time and therefore am what my husband would call an "overtipper" and give the benefit of the doubt to servers. A lot.  But I hate places that add gratuity.  I understand why, but when they do that it means one of two things for the place-

    1. I never tip over the added gratuity. Ever.  Even if the service is exceptional.

    2. I usually don't go back under the circumstances that makes them add gratuity (party of 6, 8, or whatever).

I tip 20% or more if the service is good.  15-18% if it is mediocre.  10% if it is not good at all.

I read in the comments where someone said that they wanted them to be more friendly and were too professional (how is it possible to be too professional?)  I can't stand it when they sit down at the table with you like you are old friends (unless you happen to be).

Lastly, agree with paying them a living wage.
