for Christmas one of my wish list is a nice camera...i love taking pictures of family and friends and would love to have a DSLR but in a very strict budget. What would be your recommendations for DSLR's under $500?
Thanks

Re: DSLR recommendations....
I'm a Nikon girl, so I'm going to say a Nikon D3000 if you're strictly sticking in the $500 range. You could get a D40 for a bit less, but the D3000 gives you some more megapixels to play with and 11-point autofocus.
I think the D3000 with the kit 18-55 lens is running $550.
I'm sure there are Canon's out there in this price range too, I'm just not as familiar with their product. First step might be going and getting your hands on some in the store and seeing which you prefer.
I highly recommend, if you don't already, learning some photography basics and using your DSLR on something other than "auto."
GL and welcome to an addictive hobby!

There aren't too many choices for under $500
the Nikon D3000 or canon XS?
Hi, I got a Canon Rebel XS last month and it's my first DSLR. I love it and recommend it 100%. However, here's a link (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1000d/) where you can find a very good review of this camera and many others. I would also recommend going to the store and feeling the cameras in your hands, feel their weigh, how comfortable are them in your hand, etc.
I say go for Nikon or Canon, you can't go wrong with them and they both have a "cheap/starters" version. (canon's is Rebel XS actually)
Good luck!
