Good news.
I contacted the Dairyland Greyhound Park regarding their closing, and the consequently hundreds of dogs that will be available for adoption.
They reiterated to me something I feel I should share. It is illegal in the state of Wisconsin for these dogs to be euthanized. The three options are 1) that they are returned to their owners, 2) moved to another racetrack, or 3) placed in dog rescues/adoption centers. The Park won't know how many dogs will be up for adoption until after the park closes on 12/31.
Of course, just because they're not being euthanized doesn't mean it's not an important issue. But I felt a little better knowing that. It looks like we're 85% set on adopting one. I dunno... can you call a dog that big a furbaby? lol
Re: Munkii
They don't have a lot of fur...but they are big old hug babies! Like I said, my daughter adopted one maybe 6 months ago. If you'd like to talk to her, I'd be glad to put you together.
Funny part? You have to teach them EVERYTHING! We live in a 2 story home with a pool, sliding glass doors all along the back of the house, a huge deck, and a busy household. Heather was living with us, so we had 4 adults, 2 other dogs, 7 cats, and 2 parrots
We had to teach him the regular stuff: potty training, coming when called, sit, stay, etc.
But...we also had to teach him to walk stairs up AND down, comprehend glass doors and windows, and recognize that you cannot walk on water
the pool was the funniest part. he'd be running across the back yard and think that the pool was just blue ground. It looked like a Wiley Cyote cartoon
he's just disappear, and we'd have to lead him to the pool steps and guide him out.
They are also REALLY food driven. You have to remember that they are kept hungry so that they will chase the bait and go fast. Kian is tall enough to get to the counter. EVERYTHING that smells good, he'll pull and eat. That included vanilla lotion and a buttercream scented bath bomb. So, everything has to be put away...or he does. When we have parties or food being served, he has to go in his room.
Like I said...they are wonderful, but it is a process
Very good to know they will not be euthanized. I just hope they don't place them in a "rescue" in another state that can euthanize.
You're going to be a pet parent! I will live vicariously through you.
