My husband left yesterday for Iraq and, needless to say, I'm pretty sad about it. I kept myself occupied with housework yesterday to alleviate the stress and I'm planning on staying busy while he's gone, but it's going to be a long seven months. I've been through a deployment before, but I was the one in Iraq and I wasn't married, so I have quite a different perspective this time.
Anyway, I would appreciate any advice you have and hopefully I won't have to vent too often to all of you. Thanks!
Re: He's gone...
oh hon, I am so sorry. My hubby travels a LOT for work (he's gone the month of July) and we have a 9-month old. It kills me, but seven months much longer!!
do you have other military wives you can connect with? Do you work? Do you have family in town?
Definitely the biggest advice I could offer is to stay as busy as you possibly can. Start a new hobby, train for a 5K race, learn new recipes/cooking classes, etc.
My DH is gone til Feb. 15th. I started blogging and it has really helped me. I have been scrapbooking more too. Maybe we could get together for a girls night out some Friday night and talk about how much we miss our DHs. Hang in there. Time WILL go fast. Everyone said that to me and I thought the world would just stand still...trust me, it had its moments...but for the most part...it is going quickly.
Good luck my dear and feel free to vent to me. I have open ears and open arms.

Sallyc- Thanks for the advice and I'm sorry you and your husband also have to be apart. I work full time, take classes for my bachelor's, I've started to get into volunteering, and I'm still trying to come up with ways to fill my schedule up. I'll definitely start exercising more and start some crafty projects.
I'm a Marine as well, so I'm surrounded by the military community. I know a couple of military wives and I'm planning on getting together with one of the women whose husband deployed with mine. Luckily, I grew up in Los Angeles so my family and some of my friends are nearby. I am still trying to make more contacts in the San Diego area, though, which is why I've decided to start volunteering.
MrsSDSU- It sounds like our husbands will be gone for approximately the same amount of time. I'm glad to hear you're coping well and I would definitely like to touch base with you and we can focus on getting through this together. A girls' night out is a great idea. Let me know when you're free and we can arrange something. I'll send you an email tonight so we can talk more.
Oh, and you're welcome to vent to me as well. I know we'll both need it.
oh sweetie, i'm sending you BIG HUGS!! i have no clue what it's like to have a husband over there; i know how it feels having my baby brother gone. i'm counting down until he's back mid-november.
keep busy! i'm glad to hear you have family near. if you ever need anything (i DO mean that!) let me know! my email's my username.
snuggle up w/ mars tonight! kitties are great therapy! hugs again!
:)kristi
Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the kind words.
princesskl- Mars is definitely helping to fill the void a bit. He has almost too much energy, but it's great having someone happy to see me when I come home. I hope your brother has a safe tour and comes back quickly. I have three younger brothers and I imagine it would be hard to have any of them overseas as well.
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this! Good luck to him and good luck to you!
And, seriously, VENT AWAY!!!! If you can't safely vent on a message board where can you vent? I just hope you don't have a lot to vent about and you can stay busy.
If you're looking for something fun to pass the time there's a new TV show coming to San Diego and they are looking for background. http://www.backgroundsandiego.com There's an open registration on Saturday. It's fun!
