Nursing Home recs

Anyone have any experiences with any nursing homes in San Antonio? We're starting to look into places for my grandmother and it's very overwhelming. Appreciate any input- good and bad! Thanks!

Re: Nursing Home recs

  • What area of town are you looking for?  My grandmother was at Mystic Park, off of Bandera and Guilbeau.  It is very overwhelming when you have to put your grandmother in a nursing home.  She was there for 3 years, which was longer that the doctor was expecting her to make it (because of her diagnosis--she had parkinsons and alzheimers.)  She past away this last January.  My mom and I were very pleased with the care there.  Like any nursing home, you really have to stay on top of things. Don't go at the same time everyday, LABEL everything that is hers.  I was really impressed that 2 of her nurses came to her funeral.  If you need anything, let me know.
  • My grandmother is at Morningside MInistries on Babcock inside loop 410. She now has advanced dementia, but when she first moved in it wasn't as bad and she was able to be more independent. She's since moved into an advanced care unit. Its an older facility, but the staff there is very good. We like that its faith-based. Her sister-in-law is also there so its nice that she has someone else looking out for her (her SIL isn't as bad off as she is) and we know that SIL's family checks in on her when they visit as well.
  • My sorority volunteers at the Hamilton House in the medical center. I understand they are one of the more pricey facilities in town but have a really great positive atmosphere.
  • I worked in Assisted Living and Alzheimer's care for 4 years in San Antonio at a great community.  Email me and we can talk more about your exact circumstances and the best option.  Nursing homes are soooo not your only option in 90% of cases.  My email is jennifersimko at kw.com

  • Steph - We have some friends who have lived for a long time at Morningside. They love it. Give them a call. One has a sister who is in the Morningside Alzheimer's unit. Also Barton House on Harry Wurzbach.
