Opinion on switching from Verizon to ATT

Currently we are under contract on two phones (family plan) through Verizon Wireless. We are upset with a Verizon Wireless retailer (authorized dealer) because they sold us a used phone as brand new. We have contact the BBB and also Verizon Wireless Retailer Complaint Department. Nothing has came of it. This has put quite a sour taste in our mouth with Verizon Wireless in general.

We are debating whether or not we should switch to AT&T. We are thinking about getting an iPhone but quite honestly are worried about not getting good quality signal strength where ever we move/travel to.

We are a military family so we are not able to make a decision based on our current location as to whether or not we will be within a good signal strength area for AT&T.

If we stay with Verizon Wireless we will not have a chance for an iPhone but we've been considering a Blackberry.

If this were you, what would you do? I appreciate any responses.

Re: Opinion on switching from Verizon to ATT

  • We just made the switch from Verizon to AT&T in September.  I have been wanting the iPhone since it came out.  I was tired of waiting for Verizon and Apple to tie the knot.  One thing that had us worried, like you, was the AT&T service.  My DH travels as his job (Majority of the US, not so much the West coast though), and he hasn't had a no service issue.  But, no contest, Verizon has the best network!  AT&T's network is pretty crappy in comparison, we average one dropped call a day.  Also sometimes the phones won't take calls - may be an iPhone problem, so we will have to power down/power up the phone for it to work again.  Sometimes we will just have to toggle on and off the 3G network or wireless signal.

Do you want the network or the phone?  We went with the phone :p 3GS iphones are fast - 3G network is great too.  Coverage is where the difference is.

The iPhone is unbeatable.  Verizon has nothing that compares.  We most likely will go back to Verizon after our 2 year contract is up.

  • the comment about the iphone and verizon having nothing compares - i completely disagree. we just got the droid and personally, i like it a smidge more than the iphone actually. i can not say i have owned my own iphone, but a very close friend has it and i was constantly on hers. (knowing that is not the same as owning one btw :) but really the droid is awesome.

it is more work and shouldnt have to be - but i wouldnt give up with your complaint. IME, verizon has come through in the end with things. at least for us.

verizon hands down does have the better network. i would not give that up for a phone - just because what good is a phone without a great network to back it up.

  • Are you completely set on not sticking it out with Verizon? The authorized retailer stores are like used car dealerships. I would go to a real Verizon store and talk to the manager and see if they can help you out if you want to make amends with VZW.

I've never had issues with AT&T service anywhere I've traveled to within the US.

  • Are you dead set on limiting yourselves to either Verizon or AT&T?  Have you considered Sprint or T-Mobile at all?

  • I'd stay with Verizon in a second. Blackberry wins out over the iPhone in everything I've seen. Granted, it all goes back to the same argument of Mac vs. PC. It's all about personal preference. Like PP said, Verizon will win hands down for service, and as a military family, you're going to need the reliability of that. Verizon just put out the Imaggio and the Droid, plus the blackberry. You'll have plenty to choose from.

  • DH is in the military too and we have both been with Verizon for many years now.  Verizon has the best coverage and I would not switch because of one particular phone that is being offered by AT&T.  My experience with AT&T has been limited, but it has been aweful. I don't think Verizon has great customer service either, but I would rank it higher than AT&T.  If I were you I would stick with Verizon.
  • I wouldn't personally switch because I want the best coverage.

I agree with the pp, you definitely need to continue to take this up with Verizon. I have always had them right any situations that needed to be taken care of.

  • I just want to chime in regarding VZW customer service.  If you call their customer service line and press the issue, I have found them to be very responsive.  Once, I got them to give us a new phone for my H because I was able to prove that the one he had been using was four years old (we had reactivated it when we got engaged and got a family plan), and another time, I got my phone replaced when it broke but had to pay $50 for it under the extended warranty, and I got them to refund me the $50 because I pushed the issue with them.  And I didn't even have to work very hard either time...I just used the "contact us" e-mail on their website.

If you let them know that you are thinking of switching providers due to something they have done, they should bend over backwards to keep you.  I am 100% committed to VZW and would not switch to AT&T.  I get all I need from Apple with my iPod touch, and I am currently awaiting delivery of my new Blackerry Tour for my cell phone needs!  AT&T coverage here cannot compare to VZW's at all, which is another reason I won't make the switch.

I have also been a VZW customer for about ten years, and I always point that out to them when I contact them with such issues.

  • No, seriously.  Why is everyone here talking as if Verizon and AT&T are the only cellular providers in the US?  There is also T-Mobile and Sprint.  Why have neither of these providers even been mentioned by anyone in this thread so far?

In my experience, T-Mobile's customer service has far outperformed every other service provider I've ever used.

Because their coverage is not as good, which is the OP's main concern. I agree T-Mobile has the best customer service, but you're trading that for coverage.

It might not be as good, but it could be good enough, and much cheaper at that.

Where we are, we have no reception problems with T-Mobile.  The only exception is when I'm out in the middle of nowhere where no one gets reception regardless of their carrier.  Unfortunately for me, that's where I work, but I can't take my cell phone into my office anyway, so it's no big deal.

I'm just saying that she shouldn't rule them out, because they do have decent coverage and can be much cheaper than Verizon or AT&T.

because i don't have any personally experience with t-mobile. i have had great experiences with verizon and even when there has been a problem, they take care of it. i like their coverage and their service, so it's who i recommend.

  • ohh and as for coverage being good enough, my verizon phone gets coverage in the boonies where my work cell phone through sprint does not. it would make a huge difference in an emergency.

  • I personally think the iPhone wins, hands down, but I've had one since the begining, so I guess I am biased. With that said, I have had AT&T for over a decade, and I never drop calls. I've never had any coverage issues whatsoever.

  • I think I've had every major cell phone carrier in the US at some point and I thought Verizon was the worst. I'm always a little surprised when they are ranked highly.
    Hope is not a strategy.
  • I know you said you don't want to base your choice on where you live currently, but honestly, it's the best way to choose your provider. No one carrier has the best network everywhere. Here in the heart of the former BellSouth coverage area, AT&T has the best coverage hands down. If I lived elsewhere it's likely my choice would be different. I'm sure if I were in San Fran or NYC, it would be a different story.

Not true about them bending over backwards to keep you.  I am actually going today to get an Iphone.  Switching from Verizon to AT&T.  I'm mainly switiching because I can get a discount on the plan thourgh my husband's work.  I have called Verizon several times in the last few weeks about changing carriers and they never offer me anything.  I have been with verizon for about 8 years now too.  They have said to maybe you can get a discount through Verizon with your work or your husbands.  Which is not the case, we both work for very small companies.  I'm like why don't you just give me the discount?  Why do I have to belong to something to get a discount.

My husband has been with AT&T for a few months now and doesn't seem to have any problems.  I can't wait to get my new phone!

  • I'm an Apple loyalist through and through.  I have no issues with the iPhone itself EVER.  AT&T does sometimes drop calls.  But it doesn't do it enough to make me want an inferior product.  The iPhone has revolutionized Smart Phones, and none will ever be quite as good.

  • I'm an Apple convert but I won't give up good service for an iPhone.  AT&T is the only provider that I've ever paid the $200 fee to cancel my contract b/c the service was so terrible.

Cornfed - I'm in NM too and while t-mobile has great customer service (both my BILs work for them!), I could never get my phone to make/keep a call when I traveled outside of ABQ or Santa Fe, which I did frequently for my last job...hence, my switch to Verizon.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

i seriously doubt that no other phone manufacturer will ever develop a product that rivals the iphone.

  • We just switched from VZW to ATT in July. I got a Blackberry and DH got the 3G Iphone. Neither of us have had issues with service at all (including when we've traveled internationally).

I have actually had a few issues w/the software in my Blackberry, but my brother works in tech support for Tmobile and fixed it for me. lol Works like brand new now.

DH has of course had no issues w/his Iphone at all. It's like his new best friend and it's all he talks about. lol

The only thing that grated my nerves about switching is that we were told 5 separate times by VZW that they basically didn't care if we switched (because they wouldn't let us upgrade our phones, and we've been customers for at least 10 years before they were even Verizon) and that we would not be charged a termination fee. We were charged it took them 3 months to send me a bill for it because their billing system was all screwed up. So in the meantime of waiting for a bill they kept sending late notices. lol Dummies.

I love rollover minutes, and even with a pretty high up calling plan and both of our data plans, our bill is the same as it was for 2 regular plain phones w/VZW.

Oh and btw, we have heard the rumors about VZW getting the Iphone next year and from what we know (from friends that work at Verizon), it's not totally true so dont hold out hope waiting for it...
