XP: need a mini-theme for holiday party

i was going to do the ugly sweater theme, but i'm already getting gripes about that. the party is going to be on my birthday (Dec 12th) but I'd much rather it be a holiday party, then b-day. Just happens to be my birthday. We want to do appetizers and drinks at our house. Then possibly go out later in the night to the wine bar down the street.

any other fun 'sort of a theme' ideas? i don't want to make people bring a gift for a swap. but doing a dirty santa/white elephant (gag gift or something from your house) seems like it'd be pretty easy.

i wouldn't expect any more than 15 people.

  • Christmas Cookie Exchange!

My friend and I have been doing this for 4 years now.  Each attendee bakes their favorite cookie (you can make it be a Christmas cookie if you want) and brings it for everybody to try.  Plus, enough for everybody to take some home to their families.

    Details:
    - we serve hot cider, hot chocolate, coffee and milk
    - we vote on things like over all best cookie, best presentation, easiest recipe, etc  (we give $5 starbucks gift cards to winners)
    - everybody has to email their recipe the week before and we put together a cookbook for them to take home
    - have everybody tell why it's their favorite cookie and any stories behind it

All our friends look forward to it every year.  You wouldn't have to have it be so involved if you didn't want.  You could simply have everybody bring their cookie.

  • We used to do a $0.99 gift exchange.  No going to the dollar store, though.  Items must be $0.99 exactly, not 97 or 98.
  • What about having everyone bring a small toy to donate to the local toy drive?

There was a post yesterday with some great appetizer suggestion in it.

    Hope is not a strategy.
