Invite wording..need your advice!

We are going to be having an "Ugly Christmas Sweater" party for all our friends in mid-December.  We will of course be  providing appetizers and some alcohol, probably a keg and one or two other options (I was thinking a big pitcher of sangria and one other mixed drink).  Some of our friends tend to drink a lot though, and I really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on alcohol.  Also, the last time we had a party I spent so much money on food and alcohol, and then a lot of people backed out last minute so I felt like it was a waste.  So, the point of this is I'm trying to find a polite way to say "bring your own booze because we won't be providing enough for everyone especially if you plan to get smashed".  Any ideas?  Is this rude?

  • I would say something like, Some snacks and drinks provided. Please bring a snack or drink you wish to share!
  • I would just put BYOB.  In my circle of friends it's a unspoken rule that you bring a bottle of wine or alcohol to a party, so it wouldn't be a big deal.

I think BYOB would be appropriate.

We had an "ugly sweater"/holiday party last winter and it was so much fun! We turned it into a contest and gave the winner a tacky trophy.  We turned on some music and had a little fashion show in our living room.  People got really creative on the catwalk.  It's amazing what people will do to win, lol... It sounds pretty goofy, but it was a blast!

     Have fun!

  • I ended up going with "BYOB if you plan to get extra rowdy in that ugly sweater!"  Thanks for the advice!  I'm so excited for this party now I just need to find the ugliest sweater out there!
