We went to visit Bend and the surrounding areas of Portland. Oregon is so beautiful we keep telling ourselves we should have made the move sooner. There is so much camping, hiking, skiing, mt biking, fishing, boating and shopping to do.
The only problem now is that we have discovered that Eugene is beautiful but there are other much more beautiful places to live in OR. We fell in love with Lake Oswego and Hillsboro. We would love to find an older home we can fix up ourselves in those areas. Career opportunites seem better too. It looks clean and safe, with good school systems and still near nature.
DH loves Bend most of all but it seems to be more of a resort destination than a community and the job market seems bad.
So...I think we are moving again. I'm sending my resume out like a mad woman.
Re: reconsidering Eugene...
I have applied at Providence Health & Services mostly in Beaverton. Can you recommend any communities around Beaverton? How close are Hillsboro, Tigard, West Linn, and Taultain from Beaverton? How bad is traffic around Portland?
TIA!
Beaverton and Hillboro are great...I've actually lived in both and had no complaints about either. If you work downtown I'd reccommend taking the max so you don't have to deal with traffic on 217/26.
There are also a lot of cute area's in SE Portland, depending on where you work you might want to check out that side of the river as well.
Good luck with your move!
I also want to throw this out there: www.rmls.com
DH and I LOVED this site when we were house shopping because we could change criteria and look at all houses available. We then sent the mls# on the realtor to the ones we really wanted to see. You can search by city, county, zip code, price, bedrooms, etc.
I was playing there today and saw your post, thought it may be useful!
(and no, I don't work for them!)
For looking at houses to buy, check out johnlscott.com. You don't have to use them to browse what houses are for sale. The interface is really great as you can zoom in on a map.
We live in Tigard just off of 217 near the Washington Square mall. I work in Beaverton near Tanasbourne and drive 217 to 26 every day. It's not bad at all. In the evening when I come home 217 is often congested but it still only takes me about 35 minutes to get home. DH works downtown and for him it's not bad to take 99W either.

Thanks ladies for the great info ladies. DH and I were in dicord about where in Oregon we want to live. I loved the Portland area but DH thinks it's too much like Southern CA, specially Hillsboro and Lake Oswego. I do have to admit the shopping at Bridgeport Village was very attractive and possibly conducive to my preference of the Portland areas.
DH likes Bend and I just think it's away from everything. It's like an island almost. To see a play, concert, or grow in my career I think my mind would be put to sleep in Bend. I think I would be bored.
Eugene offers good city life (with the exception of the meth addicts downtown), while still feeling small town and woodsy. So we are going to explore our options... schools, homes, etc...prior to settling.
Hey now! Take it easy on little ol Bend over here! We have feelings too! Hahaha!
You're right on the job market in Bend. It is pretty tough, especially in the construction field (not sure what field you're in...). But if you move here and say you're bored then you're not trying very hard! There is soo much to do here year round. We get some really great concerts at the ampitheater and there's always things going on downtown. If you guys are an outdoorsy couple you would reallly love it.
tiff&rod: We love the outdoors. So Bend seems like the perfect spot for our outdoorsy selves but I just graduated with a BS in Business Admin just started my masters and hoping to also get a PhD and take over the world Bend has awesome shopping, trendy boutiques, etc... but I did not see any schools. Both DH and I are in the healthcare industry and the only hospital we saw was St. Charles (which was very nice).
We love the NorthWest but the older homes there were outurages prices (1 mil?!) Yikes! The cookie cutter homes were affordable but a lot smaller. The NorthEast was more affordable for more home and it seemed like a nice area.
Any ideas? We were there for only one day so my judgements on Bend may be way wrong.
