An aqeeqa is a Muslim tradition. There is no ceremony or anything like that but there are things that the family does and then we all get together to celebrate the birth of a baby. My brother and SIL had to purchase either a lamb or a goat and then donate 1/3 of it to the poor, 1/3 to family and then they keep the rest. Also you can't bring presents for the baby (you are not supposed to "profit" from the celebration), so instead they do donations to a charity.

It is kind of similar to a baptism I guess because as part of it the baby is to have their head shaved. My SIL did that a few months ago, so it is not done at the celebration.

  • Thanks...that's interesting. I have several Muslim friends but none of them have kids yet. I'll have to ask them more about it. I love knowing about different cultural and religious traditions.
