Oh no! :(

:(

So DH and I aren't adopting a greyhound after all....

Turns out there's a clause in our condo's association by-laws that says we can't have a dog over 25 lbs.  We didn't think there was, but sure enough, it's there. I happen to know that there are people in our condo complex that break that law two or three times over.  But I also know that whenever I choose to break a rule because "everyone does it," I'm the one that gets caught.

I'm sad, but I think DH is taking it worse.   :(  We've been talking about getting a dog for a while, and we were finally ready to move forward.  Bummer.

Re: Oh no! :(

  • I'm sorry :(

I know you were hoping for a greyhound, but any chance you'll consider a smaller dog?

  • We probably will at some point.  But we were in total greyhound mode, ya know?  It seemed like such a great fit.

Maybe we'll look some more after Christmas.

  • Oh, that is such a bummer!  I know how it is to have your heart set on something and not be able to get it.  By chance can you talk to your condo association?  I'm sure some rules can be broken.  I bet they put that clause in there to avoid some large aggressive breeds.  It never hurts to ask!

  • Awwww that sucks!  They are SO sweet and calm.  How come people who have massive dogs get away with it?!?!?!?!?  Our apartment manager used to even let this one guys dog out.....he had a bull mastaf or however you spell it.....OKAY....whore....  I'm sorry.
  • Definitely consider a medium sized dog... we have a shiba inu and he's amazing and the love of our lives!  I think we might look into adopting one next year too!

  • I'm sorry it didnt work out for you, but in all honesty, maybe having a greyhound in an apartment wasn't a great idea. Dogs like that need room to run around.

  • How disappointing! And you were trying to do a good thing as well... maybe that's what the condo board needs to know, that it was a rescue situation? You can't get if you don't ask! If not, there are smaller breeds of greyhounds that you might consider, if your heart is set on that type of dog.

  • Thanks for the thoughts, ladies.  We're better today.

I don't know why some people can have bigger dogs and others can't - I think it comes down to whether or not the condo office knows about it.  We don't have a full fledged association yet. I would hate to break the rules, get caught, and end up having to return the dog.  That's just not fair to the dog.

Greyhounds really seemed like the perfect fit for us.  They're LAZY dogs (sleep 18 hrs/day+) and are overall, very docile.  Especially newly retired dogs can never be let off a lease, sometimes even in fenced areas, because the instinct to chase after small, fast things (squirrels, bunnies, balls) has been so deeply conditioned into them, it can override training in a heartbeat.  They're also very clean animals.  They're actually classified as good "apartment dogs."

We'll go to the shelter after the holidays and see what we find.  *cross your fingers*

  • Maybe it's a new rule with the condo and all those other large dogs you've seen were there before the rule?  I know you're in greyhound-mode, but I promise you'll find another breed that fits your style, and all kinds of dogs need rescuing.  Actually our shiba inu sounds just like your greyhound charecteristics -- super lazy, can't be taken off a leash, bolts after squirrels and bunnies... hahaha :)

  • Kellie,

Don't Shiba shed enough in a week to stuff a mattress?

    Stick out tongue

  • hahahahahaha... maybe a small one. :)  that is my only complaint with him, but almost all dogs shed anyway, so that's almost inevitable.  We keep him brushed (with The Furminator - love it!) so it's usually not too bad.  He sheds twice a year, so right when those "seasons" are, it's more noticeable, but he likes being brushed, so it works out.

I know there are books that list breeds with characteristics of dogs - if they can live in an apartment, if they need grooming, if they need a lot of exercise, etc. - so I'm guessing you can find it online somewhere too.  There's gotta be a medium sized dog that fits your needs! :)
