Nintendo DS

Can someone explain the difference between Nintendo DS and DS lite?

Re: Nintendo DS

  • In the line of Nintendo DS, there has been the DS, the DS Lite, the DSi, and now (in Japan, for now) the DSi LL.  All of them play Nintendo DS games - the only difference is in the hardware, and mostly in the looks department.

DS -> DS Lite: The console got smaller and lighter, and the screen got brighter.  Apparently battery life was somewhat improved too.

DS Lite -> DSi: Slightly larger screen, with a camera on the inside and the outside.  More built-in multimedia capabilities, but it loses the Game Boy Advance slot that was on the bottoms of both the DS and DS Lite.

DSi -> DSi LL: Larger console, even larger screen.  Not much else is different.

If you're looking at getting either a used DS or a DS Lite, I'd recommend the DS Lite.  I never had a plain DS, but I've heard the difference in brightness was enough to make the Lite a much more desirable device.

    Hope that helps!

  • I agree with getting the DS Lite and the screen is much better than the old DS.

DH had the DSi with the cameras. They have no games out for it that even use the camera so I'm not sure what the point is. I'd not spend the extra money for one.

One difference between the DS/DS Lite and the DSi that I forgot to mention is that the DSi supports downloadable games, so not all of your games have to be in cartridge form.  I don't know if that makes it worth the extra $40 or so you'd have to spend, but it could be if you want a really easy way to carry multiple small games around with you without having to worry about game cartridges.
