which gps for my husband's car?
I'm thinking of getting my husband a gps for Christmas, and there are some good sales this weekend. Do you have a recommendation for a good one? I honestly know nothing about any of them.
He travels a lot for work, so it'd be nice to have it instead of looking directions up on the computer and writing them out.
Thanks!
Re: which gps for my husband's car?
Here's something I previously wrote up for someone:
The main three brands out there are Garmin, TomTom, and Magellan. I have a little bit of experience with the last two, and a lot with Garmin.
Magellan - A friend I went to visit had one in her truck. Even for the short time we hung out and the few places we went to, it nearly always steered us down the wrong road at least once per trip. I never heard much good about Magellan anyway, so I'd say no to that.
TomTom - My friend had this for our cross-country trip to Montgomery, AL. It could do its job, but it could never give a good estimate on arrival time, which bothered me quite a lot. It's something you could figure out if you spent enough time with it, but it's not the most user-friendly GPS device on the block.
Garmin - This is what we bought and have used the most. While it could have a few user interface things improved (like using a QWERTY keyboard instead of an ABCDEF keyboard), it has an extremely high success rate for getting us where we need to go, and quickly. I like Garmin's dock setup too, so you can just drop your GPS onto the dock for easy viewing and power at the same time, and you never have to mess with cables after the inital setup.
Final recommendation - Garmin. Specifically something out of their Nuvi series.I vote go with the Garmin Nuvi 205 or 255. Those are the great deals this year and are all you need for just simple traveling. I just bought DH a 255 for Christmas, and then he tells me that he doesn't really think he'll use it. Fabulous! I guess another fun gadget for my car
. Definitely hit up amazon, because I got the best deal there, even over the Black Friday deals.
Thank you for the advice! I bought my husband a Garmin 255 this morning, so I'm so glad that's what everyone recommends. It was a good deal.
I got a friction mount for him for his truck. Do you think I should buy any other accessories that don't come with it? I want to make sure he can use it right away.
Thanks again.
