Re: Nativity scenes

  • I am a Christian and those kind of nativity scenes don't bother me. I wouldn't personally buy one because they are a bit too "cutesy" for me, but I'm not offended at all by them.
  • Meh....I figure that if history says Jesus was black and we worship a white guys, then bear shaped Nativities aren't the worst thing ever :)
  • I think they are just ugly and gaudy but to each their own. The only nativity set I really love is the Willow Tree one.
  • I think it would only trivialize Christmas if the person putting it out trivializes Christmas.  Any Nativity scene is just a representation of the story of Christmas.  This one is just using bears.

  • I don't find it offensive at all.  but I do find it horrifically ugly.
  • Straight up tacky.

I am a Christian and while I don't find them offensive I think they're misguided. Mostly they're just ugly, but whatever floats your boat.

  • There okay, they just aren't something I would use presonally. My Nativity is older than me probably by 10-20 years. I belonged to my grandmother and reminds me of the meaning of Christmas and my Grandma all at the same time. I would never use anything else.

I love Willow Tree products. DH and I used a Willow Tree cake topper "Promise" and I plan to get a new one for our anniversary every year. The nativity scene is beautiful.

  • I'm a church going christian - and while I don't take offense to them- i would never have one in my house- because to me, it does trivialize the meaning of the nativity.  Jesus wasn't a bear (or any other animal)... but seeing it elsewhere doesn't upset me, I just wouldn't have one.

We have the Lenox China Jewels nativity set - which i LOVE and sadly can't put out for the next few years until all my boys are old enough not to touch it :)

Right now we have the Little People nativity - so Griffin can play with it and learn about the birth of Jesus with it. He loved it last year- this year will be even more fun b/c he'll understand more. I just ordered him the 3 wise men to add to it.

  • we have a home interiors one, i think. i got the little people one this year for hte baby and cat to not ruin. i think its really cute. i don't reallly like the nontraditional ones. i love the willow tree one. i have the willow tree couple and new mommy and i would love to get a whole collection of them going.

We used the same cake topper! Loved it!

  • Not offensive, just ugly and kind of tacky IMHO.

My mom collects nativity scenes from all over the world; I think she has about 30 at last count.  I know that my sisters and I are going to have a hard time divvying those up when my parents pass away!

Mom and Dad gave each of us a Waterford nativity scene (just Mary, Joseph, and Jesus) several years ago, and I put mine on a mirror up on the mantelpiece surrounded by white candles and greenery, safely out of the reach of little hands.  I got DD and DS a Haba Toys nativity set last year and can't wait to put it out for them, although I know DD is going to take the figures and put them all over the place.
