  • With a Sony, you really pay for the name. Granted, they're great TVs, but you could get an equally amazing TV for a way better price, simply because it doesn't say Sony. Panasonic bought out Pioneer, so that's supposed to be an awesome brand. We have a lot of Panasonic in our house, and it has some great longevity. I recently went shopping with a friend to a million stores looking at LCD tvs. In the end, the plasma was actually a better picture and more recommended. They've since fixed the issue of burnout that people were complaining about in the beginning. LCD is the newer technology, but I say that just because something is newer, doesn't mean it's better. If you could hold out a little longer, the LED TVs are making their debut. In a few months, the price should go way down than what it is now. My opinion would be go for the plasma and don't be afraid to hit a few stores. Also, make sure to look for 1080p, 60hz. Those will give you the best pictures. Granted, a 720p won't be any worse, and you really won't notice unless someone in your house is big on video games or really knows their stuff.

  • We've always had Sonys and have never had issues.
  • Samsungs.  We love 'em.  We still stare at the tvs in awe when we play blu-ray movies.
  • I've had a Vizio for five years with no problems.  I got it from Costco and the price was great.

I don't know enough about video to tell you the stats on it, but it looks great and has lots of ports, which is probably all your dad needs.
