nursing moms (of older babies)

so Owen pops off ALL THE TIME when we are nursing.  It is getting frustrating.  I am pretty sure he is hungry he just wants to look around.  If this happened for you did it decrease again at a certain age, if you did some extended nursing (beyond a year or so) did they still do it?  I know its supposed to be all beautiful and meaningful and I should take my time and enjoy it, blah blah blah, and It is nice, but its taking forever now!  I do have to get to work in the morning...  and start dinner when I get home, you know, eventually...

thanks for any wisdom you can provide!!  Did you try a nursing necklace?  I am thinking of making a ghetto one out of those links for baby toys.

  • I can't wait to hear the responses...I know Austin isn't nearly as old as Owen, but Austin pops off of me ALL the freakin' time...I'm constantly just holding the back of his head there until he gets nice and latched and closes his eyes and enjoys...it's wicked annoying!!

I have to LOL at this: "I know its supposed to be all beautiful and meaningful and I should take my time and enjoy it, blah blah blah, and It is nice, but its taking forever now!" :) Because it is true!

  • I am glad you got a chuckle Lisa!!  Maybe I should try holding his head on.  When he looks around he is all smiles, so it is hard to make him come back.  He is especially bad if daddy is nearby, he loves for me to hold him and to smile at his daddy.

  • Ugh, I am right there with you!!! ?The worst is when we are traveling and I have to nurse him in the car! ?EVERY stinking noise catches his attention and he's all over the place. ?If I don't nurse him alone, somewhere quiet, it's a major PITA. ?But I do love when we nurse alone- he acts like my "little" baby. : ?)
  • I think it was probably around that age when Jude was mostly nursing before naps/bedtime, or in our bed in the morning. ?I actually can't remember - I probably should have written some stuff down, I'm going to be clueless again when the next one comes along! ? There was definitely a point when I could only nurse him upstairs, in his room, alone. ?We still nurse now, twice a day (nap and bedtime) - and we don't have that problem at all, in fact he gets pissed if I try to take him off before he has decided he's done! ?I fear he will never wean, haha.
  • Hey Sarah, I think its great that you are able to nurse while PG!  Is your OB or midwife supportive of it?  I guess I might have to take nursing back up to a calm quiet place.  I find the couch so comfy for nursing, moreso than my rocker, and I like to watch the morning news while we nurse.  So much for that, now i will never know the weather forecast!  Poor Owen will be so poorly dressed at daycare!

And I do still love nursing - usually!  It is our special time.

  • Yep, we were there. I don't remember how old she was when she started or ended that phase, but it did get better. We had to do exactly what you said and take nursing back to the minimal distraction environment (PITA, but it worked). I didn't try the nursing necklace, but I had wanted to. It was also about this time that K started to bite quite a bit (ouch!). We persisted, and she nursed until 13 months nicely. It's just a tough phase. Good luck!
