Compare T-mobile myTouch to iPhone

I have T-mobile, but really want an iPhone (unlocking one isn't an option for me), so I'm thinking of terminating my contract early. But I've seen the commercial for the myTouch, and I'm wondering if it's a viable option.

Please give me your thoughts on the myTouch. :-)

Re: Compare T-mobile myTouch to iPhone

  • First off, nothing is going to be exactly like the iPhone.  Apple, without a doubt, it really good at creating an amazing user interface.

That being said, the MyTouch is a fantastic phone.  It'll take a learning curve like with any smart phone, like with having to learn to use a virtual keyboard or downloading apps for just about everything but the most basic functions.  My wife has one, and I'm extremely envious of her.  She loves it far more than her iPod Touch.

It's much more customizable than the iPhone is, and lets you do a lot more with it.  And now that more and more phones are becoming available with the Android operating system, the number of available apps will only increase, as will their quality.

My best suggestion would probably be to go to a T-Mobile store to see if you can play with one.

Just keep in mind that you can't compare it apples to apples with the iPhone, much like you can't compare apples to apples between Windows, Mac, and Linux.  They all have their own quirks and the one you're most used to will always seem easiest on first impression.

PS - If you have any specific questions regarding the MyTouch or Android in general, I can gladly answer them for you.

  • Is it hilarious that I thought that was you in your sig pic? I had no idea that you were a man! LOL

Anyway, I've been reading up on the T-mobile forum, specifically a myTouch vs. iPhone thread, and there are a lot of very valid reasons why I think I should choose the myTouch.

But to upgrade my phone, it would cost $380!!! Are you effing KIDDING ME?!?!?

It's okay about not realizing I'm a man.  I know I'm fairly out of place on here as a guy, so I just don't bring it up very often.

Yeah, it sucks that it costs that much.  What really sucks is that it would cost just as much, if not more, to cancel your contract and get a new phone (like an iPhone) with another carrier.

One thing you might check with T-Mobile is that I think they let you pay for your phone in multiple payments that are just tacked on to your phone bill.  They usually do 4 payments, but you might be able to do more, I'm not sure.

I strongly suggest, whether you stay with T-Mobile or switch to someone else, is to ask for a 1-year contract instead of the usual 2-year.  I know that at least with T-Mobile, you only have to pay $50 extra to have the 1-year contract (as compared with the 2-year), but you get to upgrade your phone at a huge discount every 11 months instead of every 22 months!

Good luck with your decision, and definitely let me know if you have any more questions on the MyTouch!

  • Here's my data. WDYT?

Current T-mobile Plan: in contract till August
    600 Minutes/400 Texts/5 myFaves unlimited
    $55/mth

    Upgrade current provider to myTouch:
phone cost: $380?? $150 showing for new customers
    1000 Minutes/Unlimited Data and Texts
    $90/mth

    AT&T iPhone refurb 8G:
    $85 Phone/Activation
    $200 T-mobile Termination Fee
    900 Minutes w/ Rollover  & 1500 Texts
$115/mth on own plan -OR- $100/mth on Family Plan w/my parents (but it added a whole other plan when I was in their checkout line. Wouldn't I just be sharing their minutes? If so, that would take it down about $20/mth)
$10 to add GPS (but is it needed? Is there a GPS App?)
  • I am not a T-mobile user but I did just upgrade to the Hero (on sprint) and I LOVE IT from what I am told it is very like the My touch. if you check out my review a few post done.

Since the T-Mobile plan will be about $25/month cheaper than AT&T, I'd say sticking with T-Mobile will be cheaper for you in the long run.  Pretty much everything I've ever heard says to stay away from AT&T and the iPhone if you want to stay with a fairly cheap plan.

After checking, it looks like the MyTouch will cost you $380 if you sign a 2-year contract and $400 if you don't want a contract.  I'd say that extra $20 would be worth it, purely for the fact that if you do end up wanting to get away from T-Mobile, you can still do that come next August without an early termination fee.  If you do decide to stay with T-Mobile come August, they have some new pretty cheap contract-free plans (The "Even More Plus" plans) that could save you even more money.

I'd honestly recommend the MyTouch, purely because I like Android quite a lot.  Saving money in the long run is a big plus too.

  • I have the G1 and have many friends with the iphone and most of them really like my phone because of the keyboard and not strictly a touch screen.

Something else you might want to consider is the service in your area. If you have friends with at&t talk with them about the 3g service because i know many of my friends are having issues with the 3g service and dont always have it which can be frustrating. Also as the pp's have mentioned the plan price, that can be a huge difference. Right now tmobile is having a 49$ unlimited everything plan which includes data, texting and minutes, so consider these in your options as well.

  • I've been a T-Mobile customer for 6+ years and I'm an Android fanatic! I lurve my G1 and pimp it whenever I can.

If you've been a loyal T-Mobile customer, why not try asking for a deal? When I upgraded from my Dash to the G1 last year, I was kind of appalled that I couldn't get any kind of deal. Even though I'm normally very opposed to the squeaky wheel philosophy, I went into a retail location and asked. They gave me $50 off, which was great.

Why not skip the Touch and go straight to a Droid or G1? There are so many new phones coming out on the market in the next 6 months that use Android, which means more developers will work on apps for it. I doubt it will ever come close to Apple's 75K, but for myself, I prefer to support a more developer-friendly unit. :)
