Re: Fast food
I have mixed choices. Today I had Burger King... had to try out the new one across from Par-A-Dice (like BK's are really that different).
We need a Chipotle and Chick-A-Fil and life would be complete (in terms of fast food that is). Also, reopen the Wendy's in Morton or EP so I don't have to trek to the middle of Peoria if I want a frosty.
We usually end up at Taco Bell or Subway ($5 footlongs!). We're from a small, rural town southeast of Kansas City, where we'd constantly eat at Bob's Drive-In or the Dairy Queen (this is vastly different from regular DQ's. It's something you can't explain, you must experience to understand).
You can definitely spot a difference in BK's, as we discovered last night. We generally go to the one on the north side of town, where we always hear some employee drop the F-bomb (which seems to be a central Illinois fast food trend). We went to the one on Pershing last night and while the food was okay, the place itself was sticky. Every surface was sticky, listened to some employee swearing up a storm, and there were neither napkins nor straws. It was 6PM and we were the only people who were sitting down to eat.
There is a Sonic on Washington across from McDonald's now too. The Burger King is totally new. I'm still mad Wendy's closed in EP. TGI Friday's is coming soon to the riverfront (right between Arby's and Wal-Mart). So glad I won't have to drive all the way to Grand Prairie if I want to eat there now! Friday's went downhill for me for a number of years (got too fancy with the Jack Daniels menu rolled out for me... dunno how to explain it... it was all the post-college years for me that I didn't like it much... hung out at Fridays alot in college). But Friday's has changed their menu again and they are winning me over again.
I sound like I eat out a ton, but I promise I really don't. I just enjoy it when I do. Maybe 1x week on average.
EP still has some cornfields. I can see them from my house. My hometown has also gone through alot of change as well since HS. I don't even recognize it anymore... now they are working on tearing down the indoor mall and building a new fancy "Town Centre" style shopping. Good 'cause that mall sucks so bad currently, bad cause it won't be what I remember from HS (late '90s). So many new houses & apartment complexes that there are no woods left I guess I'm for nogstagia in a way. Visiting "home" is not quite the same anymore. But I'm glad I left!!!!!! I couldn't live there as an adult!!!!!! 800k for some of those new houses... no thanks!!!!! I'll keep the midwest!!
one thing I've noticed is that HS students do alot of the same stuff no matter where they grew up... drive around, drink underage, and go where no adults are. I never did bonfires (too urban to do it), but we had enough other mischief to make up for it.
