Bulbs...what else?

I have a bunch of bulbs I need to put in the ground.  We have several locations they can go.  I want to strategically do it so that when they are done blooming, I don't just have their greens in that spot for the rest of the summer.  How do you set up a flower bed with bulbs so that you can easily put in other stuff in the spring?  And that it looks nice?

Re: Bulbs...what else?

  • I put my bulbs in the ground and cover them with winter hardy pansies.  The pansies get big enough to somewhat mask the dying tulip stems. Sometimes I fold the dying tulips and tie it, then cut them off when they are completely dead.
  • You should not have tulip greens all summer because you need to cut them back once they tulip is done blooming as the other poster stated.  I put my bulbs with other plants. Since it's probalby too late to plant other plants this fall, next spring, I recommend planting other annuals and perrenials around the tulips as they bloom and after they bloom so that you effectively hide the ugly period of the tulip.  You can do almost anything really, I'd look at what's in your local greenhouse.

I have bleeding hearts, columbine, some succulents, hostas, crocus, daffodil, and a few other various plants that I can't recall the name of that I just planted last year.  They will all be coming up at various stages in the spring and the variety will keep the eye away from my tulips as they die out.
