Taking a trip to SC.

Hi ladies. DH and I are from Jax, FL and we were wanting to take a trip to Charleston in mid August. We've never been, so we're looking for things to do, places to stay, eat.. all of that. We'd stay about 3 days.

So, any help you can give, i'd love.

TIA

Re: Taking a trip to SC.

  • Anyone? I know some of you girls live there!! Come on, help me out!
  • Hey!  It's going to be *steaming* hot in mid-August, but that's why it's nice to have the ocean so nearby!  ;)  Not sure where around town you'll be staying, but Folly Beach is a verrry cool beach, very laid back, cool little surrounding area with tiny beach shops and sidewalk cafes and restaurants, all very open-air and breezy.  Isle of Palms (across the big bridge, the Ravenel Bridge, into Mt. Pleasant) is also nice but MUCH more touristy, and therefore typically crowded.  But if you can get to Sullivan's Island (tucked away from IOP) it's AWESOME.  Never crowded, just a good scattering of people, nice water, a good breeze, it feels more secluded which I like.  :)

As for "sight-seeing" and the more touristy things, you'll probably want to stroll through the market downtown, at least once.  A lot of what is sold there is junk, but it's still fun to walk through and check everything out, as it's a big part of downtown!  (It's at Market & Meeting Streets -- you can't miss the maing Market building.)  There's also a nice, big park with lots fo trees and benches and fountatins, gives you a cool view of the port and the river, might be a nice place to stop, if you're out with your baby?  There's also the SC Aquarium.  This is sort of "out of the way", but John's Island is home to a 1400-year-old oak tree, called the Angel Oak.  It's magnificent and huge, and I always tell people to visit there!!!

There are tons of restaurants, cafes, sandwich shops, ice cream and candy shops, crab shacks, whatever you could want to eat all around downtown.  If you and DH want to go out for drinks, 'Squeeze' on East Bay St. is a favorite of mine.  You'll find enough bars around the Market, and also heading north up King Street (people also like to go shopping -- or, at least, window shopping -- along King St.).

Hope this helps!!!  Things like a carriage tour or even a walking ghost tour would be cool, too!  ENJOY!!

  • If you go straight to the Visitor's Center first, they will have more flyers & coupons for things to do than you will ever, ever need!  The Ghost or Dungeons tours have been the most fun "touristy" things I've done there.  Bocci's has great Italian & Anson's (sp?) or Mistral have great French (if a bit pricey).  Kickin' Chicken is awesome for a less expensive or lighter meal! I'd advise going for more than just a couple of days or going more than once just to take it all in...and leave DH behind some so you can take advantage of all the shopping hehe.
