Overwhelmed. Good Sunday/Monday laptop deals?
I'm looking for one for DH, and if I can snag a good deal now I'm going to do it.
Re: Overwhelmed. Good Sunday/Monday laptop deals?
Sorry. That's important, huh?
I'm trying to keep the price as low as possible without it being crap. We're really on a tight budget, but it's for his side job doing graphic design, so it needs to be decent. He does a lot of work with Photoshop, Illustrator, etc so it should be able to handle that amount of information.
That's actually very helpful info in looking for what might be good. My first thought is that whatever laptop you end up getting, you'll need an external hard drive for backing up all of his work.
Do you have an upper limit on what you'd be willing to drop on the this?
Okay, so I got antsy and didn't bother waiting for a response on an upper limit on price.
Here's what I found that would be a pretty good deal for what you'd be getting. No, it's not a "Cyber Monday" deal, but most of those deals I found weren't anything to get excited about.
First, the laptop. An ASUS 15.6" laptop, with an Intel Pentium dual-core processor, 4GB RAM, and 320GB Hard Drive. Since it will be mostly for use with Photoshop and Illustrator, the graphics card doesn't need to be very high-end. A big screen, a good processor and a good amount of RAM (which this laptop has) are what's really important, and the big hard drive gives a place to store everything too. At $450, it's about as cheap a laptop as you'll be able to find without sacrificing on screen size, processor, and RAM, which are what he'll be needing.
Since this is a laptop, and this will be for a side job, having a place to back up all of his stuff will be somewhat important too. Check out this Western Digital 1TB external hard drive. It's $100 for almost 1000 GB of storage, which will be enough to back up his work files as well as music, videos, photos, etc. This isn't necessary for his work, but since it sounds like this will be a job that could bring in money, it's definitely important to have some way to keep everything backed up. You can find cheaper hard drives, but this is the best deal, and the quality and storage space will start to go down quickly with the price.
There are only a couple of other things I can think might be useful. One is a laptop bag to make it easier to transport. The other - and this is completely dependent on what sort of graphic design he is doing - would be a computer tablet. Those have quite the price range though, and I don't have any experience with them on what to look for, so that purchase can wait and be more your call. It's not necessary, and can be another gift for down the line based on how his graphic design job goes.
I hope that all helps!
