Do you think this would be expensive?

So my mother and I had the idea to make Alyssa's Baptism dress, from her wedding dress and mine ... but I don't know what kind of cost I'll be facing.  I have the number of a dress maker in Milford that I'm going to call, I think ... but was wondering beforehand if you thought this might be an expensive thing to do ... in which case, the alternative is to have her dress made when she makes her 1st Communion.

Re: Do you think this would be expensive?

  • While I really have absolutely no idea, I wouldn't think so.  I mean, you're not talking about a huge amount of fabric or anything, you know?  It's a really nice idea, though!
  • I wouldn't think so either.. but I"m really not sure!!  Its a nice idea though. We thought of doing this with Brianna.. but I just could not cut my dress up!  = )
  • I wouldn't think so either, mainly because it's a small amount of fabric and really, how many man hours could go into its creation, right?  I called the place in Milford but left a message on a machine because noone answered.  Hopefully they call back - I at least want to know what something like this would cost.
  • When I looked into it, I was quoted $200- $300. ? Hope you find a better deal.
  • are you serious?!  Whoa.  That's a tad bit expensive!!  Maybe I'll just buy one, for pete's sake.  =(  I wonder if I can use our material another way though, for the Baptism ... like to make a bonnet or something ...
  • I think that's a great idea and can't imagine how someone can charge $200-300 dollars for that.  That's insane!  I hope you can find a better deal than that!

I used Olga in Manchester for my bridal gown.  She had to practically reconstruct the entire thing (bleh, never get your dress made by an online overseas company - no kidding, right?) and she didn't charge me $300.

  • Holy crap Jeanette where did you go?? I got a quote a couple of years ago from a lady down in Hudson.  She did the tailoring on my wedding dress and told her then that I was going to make my dress into a baptismal gown.  I believe she quoted me around $75 or so.  I remember thinking that not that bad but steeper than I was thinking. I still have to do a little shopping around before his baptism, if I find someone good and reasonable I will let you know.
  • I'm curious to see what Olga quotes you. She does great work! I am nowhere near that point, but I wanted to do the same thing with my wedding gown!
  • I considered having Montha do this when I had Jakob and I seem to think that she told me that it would cost no more than $100 - depending on the level of difficulty.  Unfortunately, she is no longer in business as you know (BOO).  I'm not sure who I would go to locally that is as trustworthy and talented.

My aunt wound up telling me that she would LOVE to do this for me (She's an amazing dressmaker, made my prom gown in HS in fact!), but then decided that SHE thought it would be a shame to ruin my wedding gown and a better idea to use new fabric.  I didn't agree so much, but I wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth at that point.  The end result was beautiful anyway and it's special because it was made by the hands of a family member.......

  • Laura, I know, I am so disappointed that Montha isn't here anymore to do this!!
