Garden Placement... an oops??
Hi there. I've never posted here but I just installed a backyard with a spot for gardening herbs & veggies, etc. The mistake? It's against a south wall. I'm in Phoenix so that means it's in the shade pretty much the whole time... especially in the winter. Is it going to be impossible to garden here? It seems like, being in Phoenix, it gets plenty of sun anyway (reflected from the sun, etc) but there will rarely be direct sunlight.
Should I try to re-locate it? Thanks!
Re: Garden Placement... an oops??
I think it depends what kinds of herbs and veggies you plant, some need direct sunlight and others don't need it as much (and since our sun here is bright it shouldn't be too bad in the shade, but not positive). I'd say try it out and if nothing grows then just move it! However, I am not the best person for gardening advice..
What exactly did you plant?
I agree that you should just let things grow for a year or so and see what happens.
hey there, email me your stuff. nest.speedy@gmail.com or you might have my real gmail address too. i LOVE the phoenixpermacultureguild.org website. super helpful forums. they ahve a 4 part veggie gardening class i took and it was awesome. i have notes, I can help you out.
the side isn't as important as hours of sunlight. full sunlight means no direct sun after 2pm here. i have a garden against a short south courtyard wall in my front yard (you've been here, does that make sense?) and i've noticed that the plants that get more sun on them are bigger than the other ones. so your stuff will probably grow, maybe just not very big.
i'm putting a raised bed kinda near my west wall. it will get morning sun (good) and afternoon shade (good) and i will be putting a shade cloth up for tomatoes (they will cook without it). i put pics on my blog, lemme know if you want the address.
