I was thinking of making a big purchase on some new equipment to inspire us to get our butts moving. I was thinking treadmill, elliptical,...then I thought: Bikes.
I don't know the first thing about buying bikes for adults. And should I get a kid trailer/stroller or a kid chair? WDYT?
Re: Do you bike?
We have an exercise bike and I hate it. I hate how bike seats feel on my lady bits. And DH won't use it because he hates how bike seats feel on his man bits.
Maybe we are just overly concerned with how our bits feel. I much prefer having a treadmill in the house though, I can walk on my own time on it and watch TV at the same time. Plus, when Hunter is being fussy I figured out how to get him to sleep...walking on it in the sling.
But if I were going to get a bike, I'd probably get one with kid side car/pull thing in the back. Just b/c then you could both take her around while you biked. Plus your DH could never say he couldn't exercise b/c of the baby that way!
We bought bikes earlier this summer. I haven't gone a whole lot but I really enjoy it. I would go to a bike store and have them fit you for a bike. If your bike doesn't fit you it's going to be a miserable ride. If you tell them where you plan to ride (i.e. dirt trails or paved trails) they should direct you to bikes that will suit that. Plus this knowledge will help you if you look at bikes at other places
Unless you are hitting up Target or Walmart bikes can be expensive. My bike was around $350 and P's bike was closer to $600 - but he has disc brakes and some other things that mine doesn't have.
I would probably look into getting the kid trailer. That way she's a little more contained from the sun, wind or rain just incase. It also seems like it gives a little more protection to her incase one of you falls on your bike but that's just me.
OH I can't stress enough about buying a pair of shorts that has the butt padding in them. I wouldn't have gotten back on my bike if I didn't have a pair of these.
Ditto what Code said. It is uber important that your bike fits your properly and fits what you want to do on it. I don't know what you have out your way but Trek store can help you find the right fit and style of bike. Like Code said though they can be pricey especially if you're looking to outfit the whole family. My advice is get all the info at the store about size of bike you need and style then look online for deals. There are always bikes popping up on craiglist and ebay. Same goes with the padded short and kids trailer. This way if you end up hating biking you didn't spend a fortune.
Bikes are such a great idea! With where you live, you would get a lot of use out of them. Its never really too cold here to bike, and you have the beach and canyons all within a short drive.
R has a really nice mtn bike, and he loves it. It is a "Specialized" brand mountain bike. There is a store called "The Path" in Tustin . . . its where R bought his bike and they are having a great clearance sale right now.
I have a hand me down bike, but I really enjoy it anyhow. I'm waiting a few more months for Bebe to get stronger before I buy a bike trailer/cart thingy for her. (She's still too wobbly for one.) I think I'm going to get a cruiser style bike when I get the baby cart.
Bikes are so much fun and would give you and J both a good reason to get outdoors and spend time together.
DH mountain bikes, but he also takes scraps from other bikes to create a 'special' bike when he rides. I bike-every so often. I learned that having good gears is great! I also have a padded seat AND the padded shorts (yes, my tushy is tender). (We both have mountain bikes vs. street bikes-like Lance Armstrong uses)
My bike was around the $400 range, but I'd def get it fitted-and a helmet that fits you, too! I would also invest in some bike gloves-if you plan to do this for a workout-my hands hurt after a while. They're cheap at Target/Walmart places.
We always get them 'fixed' every year-making sure the brakes work fine and the chain isn't rusty, etc... DH can do it, though, but most bike shops will do it fairly cheap.
Have fun! We loved taking our bikes to the beach and scooting around! Of course, out of the 3 weenie kids-only 1 bikes (the girl). Who ever heard of 10 yr olds NOT biking?! So, she and I trot around town. FUN!
DH & I brought our bikes to this little apartment with every intention of using them...and have maybe twice in 2 years. We don't have a place to put them so they sit in my dining area collecting dust ugh. Personally, I don't enjoy it much because when you have to be one behind the other, you can't hear a word the other says, you might as well be biking alone. Also, I hate biking on/near the road with the traffic and bad drivers around here. If you have any wide trails/low traffic areas near you, I'd recommend it, but imo, I'd much rather get one of those 3 wheeled strollers and take turns pushing it while walking/jogging.
