Gift ideas for Grandmother-in-law

I picked DH's grandma in our family secret santa. She's 83 & really only likes booze. DH told me not to get her any alcohol because that's what everyone always gets her. But he has no other suggestions. I want to get her something she'll like & use. She always says she doesn't need anything & just wants martinis. I was thinking of a book of martini recipes with maybe a shaker & glass. Maybe including some small bottles of liquor. Any suggestions for a martini loving granny? TIA for the help.

Re: Gift ideas for Grandmother-in-law

  • A suggestion for the future (This is what we do now) - before we put the slips of paper in to draw names, everyone has to write down 3 things that they want.  So that way everyone has a list of ideas for that person.

As for this year, talk to someone who knows her well and see what else she might like.

But really- if she REALLY wants booze, then get that for her.  So what if it's what she always gets.  I always get gift cards to Eddie bauer, but that's fine w/ me becasue I use them!

  • If she just wants martinis/booze, get her martinis/booze. My grandmother wanted a bottle of Boone's Farm every Christmas. She was very easy to buy for ;)

Maybe some nice handmade martini glasses from Etsy or similar, or some fancy martini olives and onions?

  • If you can find one that fits her personality, Lola makes adorable martini glasses.  They're available at Macy's.  My 79 year old grandma is very similar and she ADORED the leopard print glass I bought her.

Also, gourmet garnishes (bleu cheese stuffed olives, cured cocktail onions in gourmet flavors, lemon twists) or hardware (zester, strainer, stirrers) could be welcome additions to the glass.

  • She already has plenty of martini glasses and a shaker if martinitis are her favorite drink.

I would get her booze and a box of chocolates.  Or booze and a martini recipe book.  But basically, booze.  Stick with what works.

  • Martini loving grandma! That made me laugh.

I googled "gifts for martini lovers" and found a slew of websites. Most of them just glasses and shakers, but this one www.martiniware.com is a bit more creative if you think she already has enough glasses and shakers.

I don't know if this would work, but would your grandma enjoy being taken out for dinner and martinis some night after the holidays? Make that her gift? Dress up, take pictures.

But if she doesn't enjoy going out, or has difficulty going out, I would think giving her the alcohol would be a welcome convenience for her. At 83, it probably isn't that easy for her to take herself to the liquor store? I would probably point that out to my husband.

  • How about a gift certificate to get her hair done?

  • If it was me, I would get her a Martini recepie book and then pick one of the recepies and get her mini bottles of what you will need for that recepie. Or get her a large bottle and tie a couple of recepies to the top.

  • Maybe some new stemware?  If she's into booze, but doesn't need anymore, get some some cool barware or drinking glasses...  a bartender's guide is also a good one...  OR, a gift cert. to a fancy martini bar/restaraunt/club...
