GPS

My DH has been thinking maybe he wants a GPS for Christmas.  I don't really know a lot about them. What should I look for?  Ideally it would be something that we can easily swap between our two cars, and something that we can easily download maps to (if I get him one I plan to borrow it for a week when I go to Ireland in the spring).

Re: GPS

  • Get the Garmin 205. Garmin, I feel, is the better brand. There is a post a little further down that goes through the 3 main brands that would be helpful to you. I just bought DH the Garmin 255 because I got a good deal. the only difference is that it tells you the street name that's coming up and not just to turn. Our streets aren't labeled well, so it works better for us. My friend bought the Garmin nuvi 200 last year and loves it, absolutely LOVES it. Go with the Garmin Nuvi 205. It's on sale on Amazon I believe today for 89.99, cheapest you'll find. Plus, if you sign up for the Amazon card, they give you $30 back on your card.

  • I second Garmin.  If you are going to use it for commuting (or regularly run into traffic) I would recommend one that comes with the FM receiver (built into the car charger) and a lifetime traffic subscription.  We have the Nuvi 265wt and the traffic alerts (and the ability to reroute around it!) was a huge selling point for us!  We also really like that it speaks the street names.
