Ever since I moved from the Midwest to Metro DC, the lack of genuine sports bars has annoyed the sh!t out of me, and today is no exception.
No. 9 Michigan State men's basketball is playing No. 11 North Carolina tonight at 9 pm in a national championship rematch. A national championship rematch!
So, I just called a so-called "sports bar" in Arlington (Hard Times Cafe) to ask if the sound for the game would be broadcast and was told "No, we have no plans to broadcast the sound for any sporting events after the the 7 pm Wizards game tonight."
What?! No plans to broadcast the sound for the biggest game in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge!? You have to be kidding me!!
Annoyed and on the phone with yet another so-called "sports bar" (Velocity Five) as we speak,
Ellen
P.S. If you have recommendations for a genuine sports bar in either Arlington or DC, I'd love to hear from you.
Re: XP: Anyone else annoyed with the lack of genuine sports bars?
We're really lucky to have a great sports bar here in town.
Try this
My beef with sports bars around here is that they are all so family-friendly. I don't want a small child running around screaming at 10 pm when I'm cursing at my team for not coverting a 3rd down.
My kid would be cursing with you, LOL. I am suuuuuch a bad influence. And we regularly take him with us or let him stay up and watch sporting events if we're watching. Anyway, enough of my terrible parenting...
With regards to the OP - I would definitely check the alumni sites of both teams that are playing, they might have a tip on which sports bar to go to. We did that recently since we just moved, and I am so happy we did.
I checked with my friend that lives in the area and she said she would have never thought to go to the two bars you called. She suggested trying these:
Carpool in Arlington (on Fairfax Drive)
Crystal City Sports Pub in Arlington (on S. 23rd Street)
Bailey's in Arlington (at the Ballston Mall)
Summers in Arlington (Courthouse area)
Greveys in Falls Church (Gallows Rd & Rt 50)
Thanks.
I've already checked with Carpool and they won't be broadcasting the sound.
Crystal City Sports Pub is where the UNC alumni meet so I won't be watching it there.
Bailey's is typically where I watch the game but the place smells like vomit and the service sucks so I try to avoid going there.
Summers is typically a soccer bar, so I doubt they'd have the sound for a basketball game, but I'll give them a call.
I've never heard of Greveys....
I wouldn't call Hard Times a sports bar. It's a chili place that shows some games. I wasn't aware that they advertised as anything else.
Try going into the city. There are several places right around the Verizon Center but their names are escaping me right now.
Yeah, me either until a few weeks ago when they revamped their image. The upstairs is now a "sports bar."
I live near Greveys and it is great. They always have the game I am looking for. It is at the intersection of Gallows Road & Route 50. It is just off of the beltway. Also, I have never been, but RFD is advertised on DC101 all the time. I am pretty sure they have a website. Check that out.
I am really lucky that there is a WVU alum bar in Arlington, so we spend most of our Saturday's there.
That makes me LOL.
Hard Times is definitely not a sports bar - whoever told you that was greatly misguided. They do have great Cincy style chili though!
We've got a lot of great ones here in Denver.
Katie Talks About...
Well, maybe not in Devner, but here in Arlington it has become one (or so says all the ads and managment...).
That's usually what I end up doing...:(
