Pet people: Recommend your vet!

I'm in the Beaverton/Hillsboro area, and will need a vet for our dog! I'd love any recs...I prefer a "traditional" vet that also likes to take holistic approaches to animal care.

Re: Pet people: Recommend your vet!

  • I can recommend our bet but I don't recommend the practice... so we're moving on to a new practice/vet. :)

Dr. Shuler from NW Neighborhood Vet (on thurman) is fantastic, very information and gentle/caring with our dogs but I'm not too fond of the staff. DH brought one of the dogs in to get lab work completed prior to a teeth-cleaning and the tech suggested to get Munch's skin tag removed from near his lower lip because it was making him ugly. Who the heck says crap like that? First of all, it was a small skin tag that wasn't bothering him. Plus, after they removed it, no after care instructions were provided resulting to the area getting infected. Really?! The prices seemed higher than what other vets were charging as well.

I've been doing some research and I have some coworkers recommending Mt. Tabor Veterinary Care (http://www.mttaborvetcare.com/public/prices.aspx). There are 2 vets so there's at least consistency of who your pet is going to see (vs a practice with 5 vets or something) and their prices are listed on the site so no more surprises.

  • We see Dr. Ulbrich at Holistic Pet Vet Clinic and like him.  But, daisygirl has gone there too and wasn't as happy with her vet.  We've seen them twice.  We don't love, love, love them or anything but we're happy enough for the time being.  We'll see how things go when with our dog.  : )
  • I used to take my cat to Rock Creek Veterinary on 185th (between Cornell and Walker Road) back when I lived in that area.  I liked that they had a seperate dog and cat entraance, and when I had to put my cat down (after it ate a bat, crazy huh) they were very compassionate.  I can't rec'd a particular vet, and this was 8+ years ago...but it's really close to you, so maybe that helps?

    Good luck!

  • Thanks so much, ladies! :)

  • I was going to you PM you about this totally forgot!

We go to Sunset Animal Clinic on NW Cornell and 147th.  They are great, have several vets and the prices have always been reasonable.  They also have boarding that we have had to use a couple of times in an emergency.

And they are open on Saturdays - which is super convenient.

  • If you're willing to cross the river, all of our furbabies go to Rose City Vet on SE Powell. They've been great.
  • Yep, I went to Holistic Pet Vet Clinic and was very disappointed with how we were treated...I had the female doctor, though...I'd be willing to go back at some point and try the male doctor...but I haven't yet. I know Jeff&Em has had a better experienced with the guy doctor.

Now, I've been going to Murray Hill Vet in Beaverton actually..I've been super pleased. I've had three different vets there and have liked them all...I especially love Dr. Goodman. He's currently working with me in figuring out what's going on with my cat (we think she has asthma)..and he is awesome. He was in the room with me the other day for EVER talking to me about stuff and when he left a tech was like 'i never thought you were coming out of there!'...he just really cares about what he's doing. They believe that people over-vaccinate their pets.. which was one of the most important things to me. They're not exactly thrilled that I feed my pets raw, but  they don't talk down to me because of it. They also offer acupuncture I think. Here is their site: http://www.murrayhillvethospital.com/

  • I'm a bit late, but even though we live in Hillsboro, we take our dog to a vet in Sherwood (Sherwood Family Pet Clinic just off hwy 99) because the entire staff is so phenomenally awesome.

My first experience with them was when a friend and I found a lost dog wandering a park.  We knew somebody who takes their dog to the clinic, so she gave us the number.  Even though it was after hours, somebody met us there and opened things up.  They scanned the dog to see if it had a microchip, which it didn't.  They put the dog in a kennel in the back and gave it food and water and a place to stay until we could find the owners.  The next day, they printed out Found posters to be put up and called a handful of vets in the area to see if they recognized the dog as one of their patients.  I couldn't believe how above and beyond they went for a dog that wasn't even a client.

The staff treats my dog so well and they're all very friendly and knowlegable.  And their prices are pretty reasonable from what I've seen.  It's not too bad of a drive if you take back roads, and I think it's completely worth it!
