Question from an Austin nestie

Hi ladies.  I'm from the Austin board, and I'm interested in learning more about Nashville.  My parents have recently moved to Memphis, and DH and I are thinking of moving closer to them.  We like visiting Memphis, but are not terribly interested in living there.  I've heard good things about Nashville so I thought maybe you could help me out!

So based on some of what I've read and heard, there are lots of university jobs in Nashville, also healthcare, and some startups as well.  I primarily do account management for startups, so I'd be looking for a similar pool of companies if I was going to move somewhere.

DH on the other hand is a microchip engineer for Intel.  In the limited research that I've done, I haven't been able to find any companies where he could do that type of work in Nashville.  However, I do know that in Austin Intel, IBM, Sun, and AMD have offices with that type of work, they just aren't the main office.

So are any of you engineers, or have hubbies that are engineers and could share anything about companies with that type of work in Nashville?  Also, if you've been to Austin and have comments on how similar or different Austin is to Nashville, I'd love to hear.  I think we're going to try to visit for Labor Day weekend to learn more.

Thanks!

Amy

Re: Question from an Austin nestie

  • I moved to Nashville from Austin about 2.5 years ago.  I like Nashville, but I really loved Austin!  Nashville is similar in the sense that there are a lot of parks, lakes, hills, hiking, etc.  Nashville isn't as "outdoor-centric" as Austin, but they do what they can.

Nashville has a Dell campus, which your DH might be interested in.  I'm not sure about the rest.  I'm not familiar with that type of work.  Also, there are quite a few banks, university jobs (like you said), and hospitality in Nashville. The Nashville job market is still doing pretty well too.  Housing is affordable (much more so than Austin) and you have tons of options.  Whether it is renting or owning.

I'd be happy to answer any questions for you...especially if you want specific comparisons to Austin.

     Good luck!

  • Like the PP said, we have Dell. DH works for them and has since we moved here. It's been a wonderful company to us!
  • I thought Dell was heading towards massive layoffs/shutdown?  Just from what I heard from someone that took off before the layoff axe fell.  Didn't HP just open up some offices in the area?

I don't think I have anything to share as far as engineering opportunities or life in Austin vs Nashvegas.  But I can share a bit about the healthcare/biotech industry here.  Healthcare is probably one of the biggest industries in Nashville. Vandy being one of the largest employers of that sort along with HCA and other hospitals. Besides traditional healthcare, there's also a small, but growing industry in healthcare support, clinical trials, lil' pharma, venture capital and even agribio.  It doesn't make itself very prominent, but it's there.

If you are interested in the healthcare/venture biotech end, just page me, I can point you in the right direction.

PS.  Also take a look in the Franklin area too.  That area is rapidly expanding with white collar job opportunities.

  • I like Nashville, but I loved living in Austin. I guess it is different now that I'm a surbanite (Franklin) with kids. That said there is a lot of healthcare here. DH does healthcare/IT. Not sure about engineering here though. You might contact a couple headhunters to see.
  • Thanks y'all.  That feedback is really helpful.  I'm also glad to hear from 2 of you who have lived in Austin before.  You know the deal! Smile
