Bread rave

My hubby made himself a sandwich earlier today, and I thought to myself it has been awhile since I bought sliced bread.  I checked the date on the bread he was eating, it said October 17.  Usually our bread gets moldy and old tasting within 2 weeks or so, but this bread lasted so long and it tasted great today.  It was Nature's Pride Honey Wheat bread.  I think I will continue buying it for now on.

Re: Bread rave

  • I don't want to burst your bubble, but read the ingredients in the bread.  If it lasted that long then it may have a lot of preservatives and other unhealthy ingredients that aren't good for you to consume :(.

I don't want to sound paranoid, but all that stuff is really bad for you!  I really wish eating organic was cheaper and the standard in all grocery stores!

This! Just because it doesn't look or smell bad doesn't mean it's safe to eat. I can hear my husband's voice in my head (he is in the process of getting recertified in food safety management) and he would definitely tell you to throw it away. The only way it's safe to keep bread past the expiration date is if you keep it in the freezer (which is what we do). It's a great option if you don't eat it that often but like to have it on hand for sandwiches, etc., when the mood strikes. Just pop it right in the toaster and it tastes almost as good as fresh bread.

  • Very interesting points.  I am sure most of the stuff in our house is bad for us, I haven't jumped on the organic bandwagon yet. I guess we were just happy to see that something hadn't spoiled quickly like most everything else we buy.  I will take a look at the ingredient list when I get home.  Thanks ladies.

  • A way to keep your bread lasting longer is to get a bread keeper. I swear by it your bread will last much longer.  They have them at Walmart for about 2.00 bucks.  A link is posted below to show you what it looks like. I fold the bag down over the brim and put the lid on it.  Also if you keep your bread on top of the fridge it makes it grow mold quicker, because of the heat the fridge puts out.  HTH

I freeze my bread too, works wonders! :)

I don't buy everything organic myself, not even close.  I just don't eat anything with hydrogenated oil, mono & diglycerides, or palm oil in it.  I also avoid high fructose corn syrup as much as possible.   Lots of products at the regular grocery store can be bought without these ingredients in them. I seriously wish they would just stop making food with all that garbage in it altogether!

Bread is actually one of the hardest things to buy without any preservatives.  I mostly get it made fresh from the deli section and then freeze it.  Mono & diglycerides seem to be in almost all the breads...

Sorry if I sound like preaching, I am just into eating healthy and think it's important to spread the word! :)
