Diet / Nutrition Question
Okay onto my latest pg issue - swelling. Specifically, cankles. They are
BAD. The inside of my ankles are totally puffy and "squishy" to the
touch. I called my OB and she said it sounds like nothing to be
concerned about, and suggested I keep my feet up as much as possible,
get compression hosiery (oooh it's sexy! and EXPENSIVE!) and increase
my fluid intake.
She
also said to reduce my sodium intake. I have NEVER in my life had to
modify my diet (which is admittedly not great) in any way. HELP!
What kinds of foods are low in sodium and what should I avoid?
Re: Diet / Nutrition Question
I feel for ya! ?I drank water like it was going out of style, and still do since I am nursing. ?Drinking that much water helped, though you will live in the ladies room, haha.
Lots of fresh veggies are great! ?I tried to stay away from frozen meals, canned meals and chips. ?I has such a hankering for chips, but since I had high BP at the end, I really had to watch. ?I wound up finding lots of sodium-free snacks at Trader Joes.
?
I'm not a nutrition expert or anything, granted, but I do know that processed foods have lots of salt as preservatives......frozen dinners, etc! Look at the nutrition labels while you are shopping and you will be amazed!
Also - if you eat out alot, try to avoid those big chain-type restaurants. Many of the entrees are previously frozen and just heated up in places like that and that means lots of salt!!! I can't even eat at Applebees anymore, as an example, because all of the food there tastes like salt to me.
I hate to burst your bubble. I think you saw my cankles a few times (I think they are infamous on this board, ha)...but really, nothing helped. I definitely cut back on the salt, but I refused to wear the pantyhose. I was uncomfortable enough, thanks, let's not kick me while I'm down.
Anywho, keep some bags of frozen peas in your freezer. Get those legs (not just your feet) up as soon as you get home and keep off of them if you can. Reduce your salt as much as possible, but no matter what you do they are just going to get worse and the level of swelling will likely rise up your calf and to your knee by the end of the pregnancy (at least that's how it was for me, and my MD said it was normal- there's nowhere else for it to go).
i'm always here for cankle sympathy, my dear.
Thank you guys so much! I am going to try and cut down on sodium as much as I can but I have never in my life had to alter my diet so I can't say I'm going to do that well at this. I did have Chinese food 3 nights in a row (we had a TON of leftovers!) and I think that is probably what pushed my body over the edge. Anyway ... I honestly don't care how uncomfortable I get, I just want to keep my baby safe - so that's the bottom line.
Heather, I totally thought of you b/c my cankles look just like yours. It is insane.
I can't say it enough: water, water, water!!! I faithfully drank 5-6 and sometimes more 16-oz water bottles daily - my kids thought water was my favorite drink!! It helps with so much - it makes you feel awesome, it's calorie-free, it flushes everything out, AND it supports amniotic fluid. So drink up!!
Fresh fruits and veggies, yogurt, salt-free pretzels, chicken, brown rice, salad, things like that. Frozen meals and soups are generally loaded with sodium, as well as Chinese food, so try and avoid those.
HTH!
PS Say goodbye to your cute shoes, too ...
at least your DH hasn't pulled a Matt and started drawing happy faces in the top of your foot. Sigh. Such a comedian, that one.
