Do you root for your conference?

I know we all have hated rivals in our conference, but when it comes down to it, I'd rather see an SEC team win any day. It makes us as a whole conference look better.  Last year when UF went to the title game, I heard lots of fellow SEC school fans saying they hoped we would lose.  I get that people hate the Gators, but come on, don't you want the SEC to represent?

So do you root for your conference?

Re: Do you root for your conference?

  • Yep, I root for Big Ten if all else is the same.  Even if it's the hated football Buckeyes.  ;)

  • Yes! I just pray every week that an ACC doesn't lose an embarrassingly easy game. Embarrassed
  • Eh... I don't buy the idea that you HAVE to cheer for your conference... Idk. I think it depends on who they're playing (I like a lot of different teams in different conferences). I HATE routing for Auburn. And I would never cheer for UGA or UT.
  • During the regular season, I don't really pay attention to any other team in my conference except for OSU [sad, huh?]. If one of the teams in my conference is playing in a big match-up, I'll watch the game and cheer them on, but I usually just stick to OSU ball. I'm a closet Texas fan because of my husband, so I cheer for them sometimes, too [except for when they're playing State, of course].

When it comes to the postseason - like bowl games, the Big Dance or national championships - I root for all of our teams, no matter who they are. I'd rather for a Big 12 team to come out on top in those types of situations, no matter the team.

  • I root for other Big 10 teams, but will never ever, never ever, NEVER root for the Hoosiers.

I take delight in them losing.  I enjoy when they have scandals.  I hate IU.  HATE from the very depths of my hating place.

I think part of that is not the fact I went to Purdue, but because I grew up in an area saturated with IU fans, and some of them were truly the most obnoxious fans ever.  Also, I grew up a UK fan, and in the southern IN/Louisville KY area, there's a pretty decent IU/UK rivalry, which also makes me hate IU.

  • ABC - Anyone but Carolina.  No lie.  The year UNC played Illinois for the NCAA basketball championship I was in Chicago.  My husband at the time was a UNC fan and still is - one of the many reasons for our divorce.  We found a great bar to hang out in and about 10 minutes before the game kicked off he asked me if I was going to let him be the only UNC fan in the bar.  No dear, I'll cheer as long as you aren't obnoxious. At first he was good but in the second half this really loud Illinois fan started talking crap.  He couldn't take it any more.

A few people that were UNC fans had come in later.  I think there were maybe 5 total.  One of whom was wearing a Tenn. hat but was from Hickory, NC.  I ended up talking to them and ignoring obnixous ex and the crazy girl.

I feel this way about OU. I am not a big OU fan - I won't be rude about it, but I can't stand OU [and I almost went to school there]. It's not because I don't think the school is great or because I don't have respect for their football program...it's the fans. I grew up in a crimson and cream city, and the fans in my city were so obnoxious about it. I know all fans aren't that way, but the OU fans I know are, and I hate that.

  • Post season- any Big 12 school not playing the Huskers.I am also an ABC fan- only I am anyone but Colorado all season long. I grew up in Colorado and have always had a dislike of CU.

  • Given a game between a Big Ten team vs. a non-Big Ten team, I'll root for the Big Ten team anytime!
  • I'm more of a post-season or tournament Big-10 fan. DH is a Notre Dame fan, and I'll cheer for them over the Big 10 no matter what. I also cheer for Big 12 unless it's against Big 10, as I was the black sheep of the family choosing Iowa over Iowa State.  I will, however, always cheer for the SEC to lose Stick out tongue.

It's completely opposite in Pro Sports, though, as far as divisions go. AL Central (except my loves the Twins) is strongly despised, as well as NFC North (except the Bears...though DH is trying his best to make me like the Vikings. I'll like AP. He's on my FF team!).

  • Gator, I'm a HUGE Auburn fan and I wanted Florida to win last year and I want them to win again this year :)

I'll always cheer for an SEC unless it is Alabama. I just can not bring myself to do it. Not at all. But in regular season play, post season play, I'll always hope for the SEC win. Except for instances like the Sugar Bowl last year...I suddenly became a huge Utah fan!

  • Well, we aren't in one for football. But I do cheer for the Big Ten since thats who we tend to play. I do root for the Big East in other sports since we are in that conference.
  • Usually not.  I can not bring myself to cheer for Florida, Tennessee, or god forbid Auburn.
Fuuck TTC - I'm moving on.

"Ew. I've read all of two posts from you, and you stink like rotting garbage."
  • Yes. The PAC gets crap all the time. Even though I greatly detest Oregon, Oregon State and ASU, I will root for them over any other conference. Especially because games against ranked teams in other conferences will help the strength of schedule for our team if we beat that PAC-10 team.

    P.S. Gerhart for Heisman
  • Yep, I rooted for Cincy all season long and hope they kick Florida's butt!

All Big East fans (yes, even Pitt fans) should have been rooting for WVU against UGA in 2006. The Big East has been toward the bottom of the BCS heap ever since we were raided by the ACC, but WVU did a lot for the conference by beating the SEC champion.

  • I always root for the SEC in non-conference games unless there is a rare game against UCF.  I got my master's there and I have some love for them, too.  They actually played Mississippi State not too long ago in the bowl game.

Prior to the SEC championship, I said I would root for Alabama if they won and I'm sticking to it.  I do have a hard time rooting for Tennessee more than anyone else in the SEC.

  • This makes me feel better about SEC fans. All of my SEC friends (most are Gators) root against the conference and I've never understood why.

I've always hoped they weren't the norm!

I think it's so stupid when people do this. Sure, cheer for UF vs. Alabama. But why wouldn't you want a member of your own conference to win a national championship? It helps your conference in the long run. (Perception that the SEC is stronger helped a 2-loss LSU team advance to the national championship game in 2008.)

  • Typically I cheer for the conference, however I struggle the cheer for Carolina. I will cheer for them at times, however I do not really want to see them win another title. I was cheering for Michigan State in last year's basketball championship.
