30th b-day dinner party ideas

I am hosting a dinner party for my sister's 30th b-day on the 19th.  It will only be our immediate family (8 adults)  My sister does not really have any close friends and our extended family is having a huge Christmas party the weekend prior so they cannot travel again for this event.

We are going to have a sit down dinner and cocktails but what else can we do to make it fun and jazz it up to make it feel like more than just a family dinner??  Decorating ideas?  We are not usually a game family but maybe there is something we can do that can highlight her as the guest of honor?

Re: 30th b-day dinner party ideas

  • How about you look up the top song from the last 30 birthdays, for the music?

Or what about a roast? As in, roasting her? Would she enjoy that?

I like the idea of songs - espicially some of her old favorites when she was little.

She is SUPER sensitive and cries instantly so that eliminates the roast...but we could do an anti-roast and say nice things about her.  I know that might sound sappy but she would love it.

    Thanks for the tips!!!

  • For my parties I like to pick some kind of theme to guide my menu, vibe of party, etc.

Is there something that your sister is really into hobby wise or travel wise? Any ideas on something about her that you can incorporate into the party?

  • Going along with the "anti-roast" idea, you could have everyone write down something great about her (or maybe a favorite memory of her, since that might force people to be a little more creative) on a cute piece of paper. Then you could go around the table and have people read them, or put them all in a bowl and you could read them randomly.

Or, you could get a cute little journal and have everyone write something in that.

And as far as making it more special since it will just be immediate family, you could do something more formal (white table cloth, pretty dishes, candles, good wine or come up with a signature drink--like alli's appletinis...that's a lame name, but you get the idea). Let everyone know it will be a little more formal, say, cocktail party attire. That might give it a more special feel.
