Do you serve your wine at the proper temperature?

Or do you just sit it out for the night? Neither DH or I drink wine but I know neither of our parents regulate the temp of their wine. We're having a party Saturday, will anybody have an issue with my room temperature bottles? We will also be having beer and soda which will be on ice.

Re: Do you serve your wine at the proper temperature?

  • if you're serving whites, this will not be a good entertaining idea.

  • I serve it "close to" the proper temperature. I read in some magazine that the easy (lazy) way to do it is the 20 minutes rule. White--store in fridge, take out, serve after 20 minutes. Red--store at room temp, put in fridge for 20 minutes, then serve.

Works for me, but then again, I'm no wine connoisseur. For a party, I'd keep the white on ice and the red at room temp.

  • It depends on your guests. Most people are fine with room temperature red wine and refrigerated white wine (always serve white chilled). If your guests are serious wine drinkers, or you're serving particularly good bottles (over ~$25) then I'd worry more about proper temperature control.
  • I like white wine cold - I usually put it in an ice bucket to serve.  And I like red wine room temperature - I just leave that on the counter/bar.

For the non-wine drinkers: I think this is akin to serving your guests beer at room temperature.

    Agreed.

Me too.  Well, except the ice bucket, but we haven't served wine to company in a long time so it hasn't come up.

  • Yes - but only because I teach wine education. Reds generally are okay at room temp, but you'll want to chill your whites before serving.
  • Reds are not okay at room temp. Please don't waste money on a good bottle for your relatives and then serve it to them as though it's a bottle of cheez whiz. In a pinch use the 20 min rule mentioned above. Otherwise, use the google and you'll have the "proper wine temp" answer.

  • I'm glad I asked. I don't drink at all and frankly I almost forgot that beer should be cold. Alright so the white will go in the fridge until then and I'll probably do the 20 minute thing for the red. The party this weekend is for DH's work friends who I usually see drinking harder stuff, but that just wasn't in the budget. I'm pretty sure we don't have any real connoisseurs in the bunch, so I'm hoping nobody has any issues.

    Thanks guys

  • Of course it matters!

Reds should be a cool room temperature (think drafty castle temperature, not modern day central heating temperature!) - under 60 degrees.  We open ours to allow it to breathe and put it in the fridge for 30 minutes.

White should be a colder, but not ice cold or they will taste flat.  I pull them out of the fridge 30 minutes before serving them.

    This is what we do.
