Marriage License?

Our wedding was the 18th, I mailed out the license all signed by the right people on Wednesday. (we got married on a Sunday) well its been almost 8 weeks and nothing yet. Does it really take that long?? I mailed it to a place that is freakin 5 mins from my house. Yea I am married and all but cant change names ect till I finally get it! UGH I hate the wait.

Re: Marriage License?

  • We got our license from a Chicago suburban office within 10 days of mailing the request.  Have you called them to check on the request?
  • we picked ours up from the office. in fact we did everything by going to the office. I suggest dropping by to see whats up.

  • Our church mailed it in for us, and we went to the courthouse and picked it up when we got back from our honeymoon.  I would go up there.
  • Ours was mailed by our friend/officiant on monday after the wedding, and it came in the mail the day after we got back from the honeymoon, so only a week later! It really shouldn't take this long. I live in a city of 8 million people and got mine back very quickly.

  • You'll only get something back from them if you requested a copy in advance. If you didn't request anything, you won't get anything. I filled out a copy request and sent it off with our marriage certificate. They'd sent one back to us by the time we arrived home from our honeymoon - granted, they sent the wrong one, but they sent something.

I'd drive over and get it.

  • Ditto arobertson... our priest did the mailing of ours, but we had to mail in a request for certified copies along with the payment.  When we applied for the license, they gave us a form to fill out and mail in to get the copies.  I'm guessing you're in between - they got the signed forms, now you need to request certified copies.

  • The procedures vary from state to state and county to county. I'd call your county clerk's office where you filed for the license to see what their procedures are to get a copy of your certificate. I waited and waited a couple weeks at first then when I called she said...well did you submit your request form and payment?! Only then did I submit my form and I got the certificate 2 weeks later. GL!

  • You should call and ask them.  The court where we got ours doesn't send you a copy back, you have to go back there and buy one.  We didn't know that because the next county over does mail them.  I ended up calling and asking about it and the woman was like "well..... you haven't gotten it because you haven't come in and BOUGHT one.  You don't get any free."  They're all different I guess.
  • I was not able to pick mine up from the county records office because they only mail them out.  But mine was not processed until 1 month after we got married so I got it this week.  I did call though and they were able to track it down for me and tell me where in the process it was.  Give them a call.  I think you live in a busy county like I do so they might just be slower.

  • I agree - call them.  My sister didn't get hers for a while and finally called.  The officiant had sent it but didn't fill something in correctly so it got sent back and subequently got lost on his desk.  (quite the mess apparently!)  She wouldn't have known if she hadn't called to check.
  • Definitely call to check on it.

It was very simple for us, when we paid the fee for our marriage license, it included one certified copy of our marriage certificate to be mailed after the wedding. I paid extra for a second copy, and they even had us fill out our own envelope to mail it to us in.  We received ours within 3 business days.

Like pps have said, it's different from town to town and state to state, so there may be some piece you're overlooking.

  • Hmmm we got married on a Saturday and the following Wednesday we got it back...must have been a slow day in my town!

  • I agree with others...in my state, you have to actually make a request to the courthouse to get a copy, either in writing to be mailed, or in person. I went in person and they made the copies while I waited.
