3 yr old b-day party

I know this is way early, but I am rethinking my plan for DS's b-day party next Labor Day weekend because we have been invited to a wedding in Italy next year the same weekend as his b-day.  This means I need to do something more low key and inexpensive than my original plan of a train ride with a few of his friends.

I was thinking of doing a teddy bear tea party in our front yard underneath a tree that I would string with paper lanterns in reds and blues (I just found some large ones for $3 at Pier 1 last weekend.)  We'll put a sheet of plywood over some cinder blocks for a table and I'll get some yardage of that red & white checked tablecloth fabric to cover.  I'll either use pillows or get some little chairs for them to sit on.

Today while I was looking for some hardware I came across these melamine plates.

I could reuse them for lots of other things and they go with the color scheme. Also we usually do lots of 4th of July stuff and they'd work for picnics.

Re: 3 yr old b-day party

  • I have to be honest. Nothing about that idea says "3-year-old" or "boy" to me. How about just a picnic instead of a tea party? And Jesus be some spiderman paper plates or something. Those things you posted are hideous.
  • I don't know too many boys that would want a tea party.  Those plates look very grandma too.  And really, you're planning this early?
  • If you want a fru-fru party for yourself, then do it. But spare him the grandma theme. He must like trains if you were going to do a train ride. Have a train-themed party. (And I don't mean a "dinner-theater train ride with grandma" theme.) Thomas the Train is your friend.
  • Hmmm never mind, I just realized the price I thought was for 4 plates was for 1 plate.  And yes I am thinking about it now so I can buy things when I see them on sale since 3 tickets to Italy is kinda expensive.

Just because 1 person pitched a fit that you came over here, please don't assume that we are all that petty.

  • I've been on this board for a long time.  Labor day is a looooong way off.  Saving is one thing, planning and buying is another.
  • Your terrible idea has nothing to do with anyone pitching a fit about us being here. Though I do think I remember your screenname from at least one of those posts...
  • You could really just go with some one-color plates, different colored napkins, cups, etc etc etc.

Like, if you're going to do the paper lanterns in red and blue, do green plates, yellow napkins, orange cups, etc. Then for the cake you could make it multicolored. I recently saw a cake someone did that was rainbow inside. It sounds cheesy but it was actually very creative. This would give you a lot of room for creativity and frugality.

If you wanted to purchase plates you could reuse, that might be a better option, going with a solid color rather than a pattern.

Now, if you're looking for plastic plates that you can re-use Sams and Costco are carrying plastic plates in packs of 40 (20 large, 20 cake sized) that are white with a silver band for ~$15 per pack. They look like they would last at least 20 or so parties.

    Yes

I  think that the tea party and floral plates are more little girl than little boy, but I really like this idea from butter cookie and that cake looks amazing.

You could make up little goodie bags for the kids, and maybe do face painting.  As a kid I loved that stuff.

Thanks!  That cake is super cute.  I really hadn't started thinking of exactly what cake I would do, I have done baseball cupcakes for the last two parties.  I was thinking pb&j and cheese sandwiches cut out in shapes.  And maybe bear shaped sugar cookies.  Maybe the kids could decorate them? Gummy bears or teddy grahams.  Anyway I'll have to steal that cake idea for something. :)
